Joel Martinez is a 2019 RHP/OF, 1B with a 6-2 140 lb. frame from Norwalk, CA who attends St Paul. Large frame with a lean, athletic build. Frame projects to support plenty of additional size and strength. Ran a 7.79 sixty yard dash. Primary right handed pithcer, simple side step to leg lift delivery. Smooth paced actions and tempo throughout offering. Creates good hip torque at gather showing back pocket. Lower half drives to the plate with drop and drive mechanics. Tends to land at a slight close position while working over a flexed front side. Compact arm cirlce back at separation and comes through with a mid three-quarters slot. Produces some downhill angle on a fastball that sat in the low 70's. topped at 73 mph. Flashed good command of a curveball that had 11/5 shape with loose spin and occasional depth in the low 60's. Mixed and matched pitches well with the ability to throw curveball in positive and negative counts. Frame and arm action projects for additional velocity with continued phsyical development. Also worked out defensively from the outfield showing active footwork while closing on the baseball. Extended arm cirlce at separation with deliberate actions while working through exchange. Loose arm action from a three-quarters slot that produce some uphill carry to the bag with accuracy, topped at 75 mph. Right handed hitter with a spread, straight stance and high back elbow set. Lower half laucnhes to contact with rotational actions with some back side tilt. Compact, direct path to contact that produces some leverage through extension. Flashed barrel and hand control to all fields. Primary worked the baseball to the middle of the field, but turns to the barrel occasionally to pull side producing developing bat speed to the pull side gap. Will continue to improve at the plate and on the mound with physical maturity. Very good student as well.
