Nolan Monthei is a 2016 C/3B with a 5-10 175 lb. frame from Johnston, IA who attends Johnston. Athletic frame with present strength throughout. Shows a slightly open stance with a higher back elbow and hand set. Rocks back to a strong loaded position and creates lower half coil in the front side. Shows good bat speed with a compact path and has intent to hit the ball hard. Has a tendency to be extended at times with varying barrel contact when hand path starts around baseball. Increased barrel control and power project with physical maturity. Very solid defensive tool set as a catcher. Shows a good low set with soft hands while receiving. Extended range to both sides with solid blocking technique. Shows short, quick actions on throws and creates downhill direction to the bag. Solid arm strength with online carry and accuracy, topped at 76 mph with a 1.87 best pop time. Very athletic catcher. Also took reps from shortstop showing compact arm actions with good online carry. Surrounds the ball well with clean glove actions and transiton. Topped at 81 mph across the infield. Good student as well.
