AJ Pierce is a 2017 RHP/ with a 6-5 190 lb. frame from Ankeny, IA who attends Ankeny Centennial. Extra large from with long limbs and a lean, athletic frame. Projects for additional strength with continued physical development. Ran a 7.04 sixty yard dash. Primary right handed pitcher with a simple side step to leg lift delivery. Stays tall on back side at gather and drive to the plate with drop and drive actions. Front side tends to land at a slightly closed position causing some crossfire arm action at release. Creates a deep arm circle back at separation and releases with a smooth arm stroke through finish. Fastball flashed some life through the zone in the upper 70's to low 80's, topped at 81 mph. Curveball had 10/4 shape with soft spin and occasional depth when working down in the zone. Tends to slow arm speed with curveball offering, flashed better depth and break when maintaining arm speed through extension. Consistently filled the zone with each pitch with developing command to the ended of the plate. Frame and arm action project for additional velocity with continued physical development. Also worked out defensively from first base showing smooth paced, athletic actions while surrounding and funneling the baseball. Clean, deliberate exchanges while working through transition. Topped at 80 mph across the infield generating good carry to the bag with accuracy. Right handed hitter with an upright, narrow stance. Compact, direct path to contact with a line drive plane through extension. Consistently barreled baseball throughout batting practice to the middle of the field generating occasional rising line drives to the gaps. Flashed some bat speed and strength at contact as well. Outstanding student.
