Boyd is a slender and athletic 6-4, 175 lb right handed pitcher from Kentucky with very good physical projection. He showed his athleticism by running a 7.15 60 with smooth, easy running strides on the slow track and throwing 86 from the outfield. Boyd also showed some pop during batting practice. As a pitcher, Boyd is on the raw side but shows lots of potential. He throws from a high ¾’s arm slot on his fastball with an easy and effortless arm stroke. Boyd topped out at 85 mph and pitched consistently at 82-84. His fastball is fairly straight from that release point. Boyd dropped his release point noticeably on his 67-70 mph curveball and 73 mph split change and might want to consider throwing his fastball from the lower slot, too, to help create more life on that pitch. With his projectable frame and effortless arm action it’s easy to see Boyd developing into a high 80’s pitcher in the near future. Keep a close eye on this one.
