2007 California Underclass Showcase
Ronnie Shaeffer is a 2008 C/IF with a 6'2'', 180 lb. frame from Garden Grove CA, who attends Pacifica HS. He has lean, athletic build that is attractive for a young catcher. Shaeffer is a solid young player with good tools, projectable ability, and a hard nosed style of play. He has chance to be a high level defensive catcher with good offensive abilities, and clearly that is a valued combination. With an easy swing, quick bat and short path to the ball, Shaeffer can handle quality pitching. He has a line drive swing and drives the ball from gap to gap, maintaining balance throughout. As he gets stronger and more polished, he looks capable of hitting for average and some pop at the college level and then possibly beyond. As a catcher Shaeffer also stood out. He is a good receiver with soft hands and an athletic set up behind the plate. His transfer is smooth and quick and he has lively actions, bouncing out of his crouch easily. Shaeffer has quick feet and a quick arm and his overall skill set as a catcher will rate very highly among all '08 high school catchers. His 2.04 pop-time has a chance to be the norm for him. Major D1 programs should have him high on their follow lists if they are in the market for a catcher.
