2004 Indoor Pitchers/Catchers Showcase
Randy Johnson: Johnson is a 6-1 senior right hander from Wisconsin with a strong body. We have the feeling that we didn’t see Johnson at his best. He has a few mechanical issues he needs to address, like most young pitchers, but his arm worked well. Johnson threw 79-81 mph on his fastball with some boring action and had a 69-72 mph curveball that had a late slider type break. One Jugs gun did get an 86 mph fastball. Johnson is a bit of a wrapper in back and his free wheeling delivery lets him drift towards the plate so his arm is always a little late coming through. But with the way his arm works and his present strength, Johnson should be a mid-80’s guy on his fastball. Check back in the spring to see what he’s doing. He also showed some good hitting ability despite having to face some very tough pitching. Randy is an excellent student.
