LATEST PG SHOWCASE REPORT
2006 National Showcase
Kevin Patterson is a 2007 left hand hitting 1st baseman/catcher from Oak Mountain HS, residing in Birmingham, AL. Simply put, his 6'4" 215 lb. frame is a Big League body. He is strong and athletically proportioned but not without some room to continue to get stronger. He was one of the most intriguing players at PG National and was talked about an awful lot, eventually earning him a #28 ranking among PG National Top 100 position players. At the plate Patterson is an imposing physical presence. Each time he stepped to the plate there was the expectation that he could leave the yard. Even his outs had scouts writing positive notes like... close, could be a monster... He hits from a square stance and showed a short power stroke. He can miss the sweet spot and still drive the ball out of the yard. His underway bat speed is a plus. The ball jumped off Patterson's bat and he showed that power to all fields. His hands really work, almost like you might expect from a contact/spray hitter. Patterson is a power/contact hitter. He seemed to hunt pitches and when he got them he put a good swing on the ball. There were times he tipped over a bit and caused himself to get the ball off the label, but he was still right on those pitches. It is flat out scary to consider a metal bat in his hands at the college level. On defense Patterson showed very good feet, a good arm, good hands, and overall is a very solid defender at 1st base. Later in the showcase he went behind the plate and showed catch/throw ability below 2.0, all the more intriguing. Patterson ran 4.45 home/1st and posted a very impressive 6.81 laser timed 60. He is a tremendous prospect and could climb draft charts quickly next spring, into the very early stages of the first day of the draft.
