LATEST PG SHOWCASE REPORT
2003 National Showcase
Moreland both caught and pitched at the National showcase, caught most of the bullpens and generally acted like he wanted to be involved in the action at all times regardless of what position we put him at or what we asked him to do. He looks like a great player to have on a team from a coaches’ perspective. We felt that he showed the most promise on the mound for the long-term. Moreland uses the big Hideo Nomo back turn that we’re seeing more and more of with young pitchers and we’re not sure it helps him right now as he really doesn’t get all the back centered to the plate consistently. He threw 86-88 mph from a mid to low ¾’s release point and it isn’t difficult to feel that he’d add some velocity and movement if he got square through the plate. Moreland threw two different curveballs depending on whether he was facing a right handed hitter or left handed hitter. To right handers he used a lower release point and got better spin and velocity at 73 mph. To left handers, Moreland’s arm slot was high and he had looser spin at 68 mph. He obviously needs a consistent approach with his breaking ball and the lower arm slot is much more effective right now. Moreland showed some good ability with the bat and at 6'4/200 he definitely has wood bat power potential. He's a lot of fun to be around as he plays for keeps and is willing to do anything. On the mound he might end up being extra special down the road. He can produce at the very highest level of college baseball. As a pitcher, with a few adjustments and a bit more velocity he could easily become a nice draft. Keith is an excellent student.
