LATEST PG SHOWCASE REPORT
2006 National Showcase
Erik Goeddel is a 2007 right hand pitcher from Bellarmine College Prep, residing in Hillsborough, CA. Goeddel has a lean and loose build on his long 6'3" 170 lb. frame. There is significant room for him to fill out. Long regarded as one of the nation's top talents in his age group, Goeddel again showed why at PG National where he was ranked #7 among PG National Top 85 pitchers. His stuff has basically stayed the same for the last couple of summers, but his pitchability and repertoire both continue to improve... and both have been outstanding over the last few years. When he makes a physical jump, expect Goeddel to leap back to the top of the pack among his peers. There is not an '07 right hander with his combination of stuff, command, savvy, moxy, and mound presence. Others have better fastball velocity now and others have more movement on their fastballs, but taken as a whole, he remains the most complete right hander in the '07 class. He pitches from an over the top slot with a deliberate delivery, getting his body in sync over the rubber. He maintains good rhythm throughout his delivery and repeats is quite well. Some have expressed concerns with the way he pulls his head to the 1st base side and drops his lead arm down and away, but neither part of his delivery affects his command and ability to repeat. His arm is loose and from the apex of his arm arc, he has plus arm speed. Goeddel gets his hand out front to very good extension and commands his hand well, allowing him to manipulate the ball easily. You can tell there has been a lot of time and effort to develop what for him is a polished delivery. Maybe the most impressive thing Goeddel does on the mound is finish each and every pitch. Then again, his unflappable demeanor is also quite impressive. His fastball is 88-92 mph and he has plus command to both sides, and plus downhill plane. Goeddel's pitchability with his fastball is exceptional. He has two breaking balls, both are quality with his 73-77 mph curveball being a plus offering. He can throw that pitch with 12/6 shape or can put some lateral movement on it when he goes to it for a strikeout. Goeddel's curveball drops off the table and dives below bats, but to the bottom of the zone. His 78-80 mph slider is not used as much but he shows feel and command of that pitch too. With a plus 79-82 mph change-up, Goeddel has a full arsenal to work with and can go to any pitch at anytime. When he is on, he is razor sharp, like a surgeon on the mound. When he is not one, he is still very very good. In addition to all that, he can swing the bat too. There are times that he has shown well above average power potential. His bat speed is a plus and he is an aggressive hitter. Someday when he is in the big leagues and hits a few home runs as a pitcher, remember this report. He can hit. The ball carries off his bat and makes a loud crack at contact. Goeddel ran 7.18 in the 60. He has committed to UCLA and most have simply assumed that he is college bound because of his plus academic standing. However, people also assumed that he would attend a different Pac-10 school and he went the other direction. Stay tuned.
