Firmstone Powers Mavericks

6/8/2014

Firmstone (2016, Greenville, SC) blasted a 2-2 pitch over the wall in left that would put the Mavericks ahead 5-0 in the second inning. A lead they would never relinquish as they received six strong innings from their started Walker Powell.

Powell (2015, Fayetteville East, AR) allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk while striking out eight to earn the win. The 6'7" right-hander towered over batters and demonstrated outstanding arm speed as his cutting fastball topped out at 88 mph while sitting mostly between 84 and 87. Taylor Giles (2015, Lassiter HS, GA) earned the win with an inning of scoreless baseball, striking out two with one hit surrendered. The fastball peaked at 84 mph and sat in 80-84 mph range, and he also threw a few 68 mph curves. At the plate he was 2-3 with a pair of singles, two runs scored and an RBI. He also swiped a pair of bases.

Bryce Sperrazza
(2015, North Paulding HS, GA) had the only double of the day, also knocking in one run. He was hit by a pitch, reached on an error, and stole a base as well.

Four different Scorpions had two-hit days, with Zack Moore (2015, Ashford HS, AL) doing the most damage with a single and a solo home run to lead off the third inning. Six-Run Seventh Seals Win for Prospects

Ethan Gillis (2015, Whitewater, GA) started and earned the win tossing four scoreless innings and allowing only two hits while striking out eight. The Kennesaw State commit showed two solid off speed offerings with his curve and change. The curve was his go to pitch as it sat in the upper 60's with good depth. He also flashed a potentially plus change with good sinking action that was in the low 70's that kept hitters off his low to mid 80's fastball that topped out at 87 mph.

Late Comeback Lifts Bulldogs

6/8/2014

Trailing 6-2 heading to bottom of the sixth inning, the outcome looked bleak for the East Cobb Bulldogs but they would proceed to score five times in the inning, highlighted by a two-run line drive single to right by Jacob Ramos to lift the Bulldogs to a 7-6 victory over the Georgia Roadrunners.

Cole Austin (2015, Harrison, GA) and Jackson Webb (2015, Fellowship Christian School, GA) each had three hit games for the Bulldogs as Austin would score two runs and Webb drove in two on a two-run double in the third inning.

Ramos (2015, Pope, GA) would also pick up the victory on the mound for the Bulldogs tossing 3.1 innings and allowing only one run on three hits while walking one striking out six. The right-hander used a lot of curveballs to keep hitters off his low 80's heater that topped out at 84 mph.

Craft showed good command on the mound, changing speeds well to keep hitters off balance. He attacked with mostly all fastballs that ranged from 81-84 mph.

Spencer had dominating stuff as he blew hitters away with a fastball that topped out at 91 mph and sat 87-90 throughout his outing. He also showed a late breaking, 12 to 6 curve in the lower 70's that he used as an occasional out pitch.

DoubleDay Rockies easily down the Mets 7-1

6/8/2014

After catapulting themselves in the lead with heads up baserunning by Michael Markwordt (2017, Blessed Trinity Catholic HS, GA), the East Marietta Mets could not scrape anything else together, giving up seven unanswered runs to the DoubleDay Rockies 17u squad.

The Rockies were led by the power bat of Brody Wofford (2015, Model HS, GA), a Jacksonville State commit. Wofford got his thump on in the third inning, launching a two-run shot to his pull side of right field, driving in Devin Bilardello (2015, Hillgrove HS, GA) who had tripled two batters earlier. It was Wofford's only hit of the game while Bilardello was 2-3 with three RBI of his own, compliments of a triple, single, and sacrifice. He also stole a pair of bases and scored once. Stetson Scott (2015, Rabun County HS, GA) came around to score twice after reaching via a walk and a double.

Evan Mather (2015, Rome HS, GA) took the ball for the Rockies and tossed four innings of one run ball, surrendering a pair of walks and four hits with six strike outs, a wild pitch and a hit batter. Mathers sat 78-82 with his fastball, touching 83 mph with a 68-70 mph hook and he threw one 74 mph change up.

For the East Marietta Mets, Chase Barker (2017, Walton HS, GA) was the only one to get an extra base knock, hitting a double but was stranded at second. Randall Quarles (2016, New Manchester HS, GA) reached base three times via a pair of walks and a single, but he too was stranded on the basepaths each time out.

DeMarini GA 17u fend off Titans Baseball 3-1

6/8/2014

A two-run fourth inning held up for DeMarini GA 17u as they would tack on an insurance run in the seventh inning to walk away with a 3-1 win over Titans Baseball. The win advances DeMarini GA 17u into the quarterfinals where they are matched up with East Cobb Bulldogs 17u.

Jake Bogosian (2016, Blessed Trinity Catholic HS, GA) was behind the fourth inning rally, knocking a two-run triple, driving in Chris Siebert (2015, Blessed Trinity Catholic HS, GA) and RaeKwon Bennett (2015, Evans HS, GA). It was Bogosian's only hit of the game but he made it count. Siebert singled walked and scored once in the game with a sacrifice while Bennett picked up the only multi-hit game of the contest, going 2-3 with a double, single, stolen base and run scored.

Zachary Schulman (2015, Decatur HS, GA) was in ace mode, throwing the DeMarini squad on his back and twirling a masterful complete game with only one run crossing the dish. He allowed the one run on four hits and two walks with six punch outs in the game. He ran his fastball up to 81 mph and sat comfortably in the 77-80 mph range, generously mixing in his slow 61-63 mph hook and a 68-69 mph change up.

Titans Baseball was led offensively by lead off man Gabriel Holt (2017, Veterans HS, GA) who was 2-3 with a triple, single and a run scored. Randal Heller (2015, Lassiter HS, GA) and Alex Speas (2016, McEachern HS, GA) picked up the only other hits with Bryce O'Brien (2016, Etowah HS, GA) knocking in the lone run.

Kyle Brnovich (2016, Kings Ridge Christian HS, GA) pitched admirably in the losing effort, throwing six innings with just two runs allowed on five hits, three walks, and he struck out seven. His heater was 78-82 mph with a max velocity of 83 mph, and he also worked in a fair amount of curves, throwing 22 of them in the 72-76 mph range. Brnovich also featured a 75-76 mph slider and 74 mph change up.

Speas came on in relief of Brnovich and finished up the game with an inning of work, bringing the cheese up to 88 mph with good life, a good follow through, good hip rotation. He comes from a high 3/4 arm slot and stays tall on his backside, using his lower half and getting good extension out front. Scouts like his makeup and he's got a high ceiling due to his present velocity and athletic 6'3, 170 pound frame.
