Matt Whelan, Texas
Whelan was the sixth pitcher that Texas head coach David Pierce turned to in the Longhorns’ 4-3 series-clinching win over visiting Texas Tech, coming on in the seventh innings and providing two key frames. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound sophomore righthander presents a challenge for any lineup as his quirky pitching motion gives opposing hitters difficulties, using a high three-quarters arm slot with his long arms and legs providing a lot of extra movement, to go along with a pronounced turn. The ball appears to jump out of his hand and gets in on the plate in a hurry.

He uses a solid three-pitch mix and pitched off of an impressive two-seam fastball that was consistently clocked in the 90-92 mph range. None of his fastballs were straight as each heater had heavy sink and arm-side run, making it that much difficult to barrel up. Whelan also mixed in a tumbling 75-77 mph changeup and a slurvy 78-80 mph breaking ball that had more sweep than downward plane. Although his breaking wasn’t as hard-biting as a traditional slider, it was a great complement to his active, moving fastball.

Coach Pierce tried to get another inning out of Whelan but was pulled after giving up a two-run home run to Josh Jung in the top of the ninth, a blast that pulled the Red Raiders within one. Outside of that blast Whelan worked fast and with great confidence, and his ability to hold Texas Tech at arm’s length was the positive result that Texas used to beat their Big 12 rivals from Lubbock.
