EMERSON, Ga. – DRB Elite defeated the Upstate Mavericks ST in Sunday afternoon’s championship game of the WWBA Southeast Qualifier #2 by a score of 11-4.

It took a few innings before either team’s offense started going as Sam Ellis for DRB was pitching to contact and getting quick outs through three innings. Ellis finished the day going 6 innings with six strikeouts and one run allowed which helped him earn the championship game win.

The scoring began in the top of the third inning as Josh Davis drove in Cooper Torres after Torres doubled to lead off the inning. C.J. Abrams was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat before Graham Pauley, a Duke commit, drove in Abrams and Davis on a two-run double to right field.

DRB would not look back as they would add another three spot on the scoreboard in the next inning.  All three runs scored with two outs, as Reuben Church would triple, followed by a Cooper Torres walk that would allow Josh Davis to be the RBI producer again, his second RBI of the game. The next two runs came across on the very next pitch as C.J. Abrams tripled to the left-center field gap to make the score 6-0.

The Mavericks would get one run back in the bottom half of the fourth as Timmy Conway would drive in Connor Pavolony on an RBI groundout to the second baseman. Pavolony reached base on a 99 mph exit velocity single to center field.

DRB opened the floodgates in the seventh inning as run-scoring hits by Cooper Torres and Mitchell Landon, as well as a sacrifice fly by Reuben Church, would help DRB muster five insurance runs across the plate, making the score 11-1

Upstate would not go away lightly in the bottom of the seventh inning, however. William Root would lead off the inning with a single to left field. Jett Kern added a ground-rule double to right field before Austin Hunter would drive in Root for the first run of the seventh for the Mavericks. The Mavericks were not done yet as Jack Alexander would single to right field to score Hunter and Tylan Reece, who singled prior to Alexander’s at-bat.

After the three runs were scored for the Mavericks, the scoring was done and the game was finalized.

With the win DRB Elite is heading to Jupiter with a paid invitation to the WWBA World Championship and Coach Josh Meade was excited for his players after the win.

“I know the boys are happy so it should be a good time,” Meade said after the game. “That’s the one tournament, especially, out of all the tournaments all year long, that you hope you find a way into.”

DRB went through quite a run in bracket play to win the Southeast Qualifier #2 championship, winning four games in one day to make it happen. DRB stands for ‘Done Right Baseball’ and they did it right on Sunday’s marathon day.

The MVP of the Southeast Qualifier #2 was Reuben Church. Church had an impressive offensive tournament going 13-for-23 (.565) at the plate with five extra-base hits and eight RBI.

The MV-Pitcher of the tournament was Jett Kern. Kern tossed three one-hit innings and did not allow a run in his three innings of work while striking out seven.
