Changed Texas state of mind

HOUSTON – Sometimes hitting rock bottom is needed to turn things around.

The Texas Longhorns, one of college baseball’s most historic programs, know this better than anyone right now.

Despite always having the expectation of Omaha or bust, the Longhorns would’ve just been glad to be in the NCAA postseason the last two seasons. Texas went 30-22 in 2012 and had a legitimate argument to be in the postseason tournament with a fourth-place conference finish. However, that wasn’t in the cards. Then, last season, the Longhorns reached a historic low, finishing ninth (last) in the new-look Big 12 with a 27-24 overall record, and obviously again missing the NCAA postseason.

That served as the ultimate wakeup call for a program that adamantly suggests not dog piling until Omaha, not out of spite, but as a clear-cut sign of where expectations lie for the burnt orange and white.

Not continuing to be a mainstay in the NCAA postseason has been a tough pill to swallow for Garrido’s program, but it’s something that has fueled them so far this season, and in part, has them focused and off to an impressive 9-3 overall record, including a 3-0 mark at the Houston College Classic over the weekend with wins over Houston, Rice and sizzling Sam Houston State.

“This is about our attitude, about a change in culture and what we’re trying to accomplish,” Garrido said. “We’re playing well and this is a very focused team. I couldn’t be more pleased at this point.”

Though the Longhorns are ecstatic after a strong weekend in Houston, they’ve already experienced some obstacles this season. And unlike last year, they’ve passed the ones in their way.
