1. PG and the 2002 MLB Draft

New York, NY - While it’s obviously not a PG event, the Major League draft in June is the biggest of all 2002 PG stories. 354 Perfect Game players were selected by the 30 Major League clubs. This wiped out the previous high mark of 243 PG players selected in 2001.

Other PG records were set by the number of 1st round selections (17). Six of the first 8 selections were PG players. They were the six who signed early. 11 of the first 12 high school players drafted were PG players. Another record was the number of PG players selected in the first two rounds (32). Close to 90% of the high school players chosen in the first two rounds were Perfect Game players.

The draft also revealed some interesting results about “Prospects Plus” and the Perfect Game player rankings. Some 600 high school players were drafted. Of those drafted in the first 30 rounds 95% were listed by Perfect Game in the player rankings. Of those drafted in the first 10 rounds, all but 3 were ranked players. Not one player drafted in the top 100 was unranked by PG and only 4 players drafted in the first two rounds had not participated in a PG event.

B.J. Upton (VA) SS, was the first high school player selected (2nd overall). Next came Chris Gruler (CA) RHP who was picked (3rd overall). Clint Everts (TX) RHP was chosen (5th overall). Zach Greinke (FL) RHP was selected (6th overall). Prince Fielder (FL)1B, went (7th overall). Scott Moore (CA) SS was then picked (8th overall). Jeremy Hermida (GA) OF went (11th overall). Scott Kazmir (TX) LHP then went (15th overall).

Those eight picks were all high school players. All eight had participated in Perfect Game events. Most of the eight had many PG events under their belt.

All but one PG player drafted in the first round signed. The exception was John Mayberry, who went to Stanford. Combined the PG 1st rounders received close to 28 million dollars in signing bonuses. PG players among the top 100 selections received close to 42 million dollars in signing bonuses. Four PG players drafted among the first 100 picks decided not to sign.

The number of PG players drafted has increased each of the past eight years. 2003 should be another big year for PG players.
