PG Top Prospects Workout Pre-Draft Workout

About 50 outstanding players worked out in cold, wet, windy conditions Sunday at the Perfect Game Prospects Workout. Two infielders who arrived in Cedar Rapids early for Tuesday's National Pre-draft work out, showed why they are considered a couple of the best prospects in the nation. A slugging outfielder/1st baseman and another outfield/infielder both from Iowa displayed some serious ability. A RHP from Indiana, who couldn't attend Tuesday's Pre-draft, was the top high school pitcher on Sunday. A D&F pitcher from Iowa had an outstanding performance.

The Two Infielders

Infielders Trevor Crowe a U of Arizona signee from Oregon, and James Guerrero a San Diego State signee from California, gave scouts a brief glimpse of their talent. Crowe ran a 6.60 - 60 and showed power from both sides of the plate. He continued to be the best hitter against live pitching, in fact he never swung and missed all day. He has a great approach, very quick hands and he creates outstanding bat speed. Guerrero, who we consider the best pure baseball player in high school this year, showed a controlled swing, hitting nothing but line drives all over the field and with some surprising power. Defensively he is smooth and quick with some of the best actions you will see. He has great hands and a strong quick arm. Guerrero did not run the 60, but will on Tuesday.

The Two From Iowa

James Peterson's left-handed swing produced a couple of the longest home runs during batting practice. Peterson, a Wichita State signee, is just rounding into baseball condition. He ran and hit about as good as we've seen him this spring. Gerard Gause, who has yet to sign with a college showed perhaps the strongest arm at the event. He also ran a 6.8 - 60 and hit the ball well.

The Top Pitchers

Matt Bolander RHP from Indiana threw 2 innings, displaying a 91-92 mph fastball. His breaking ball appeared a bit slow, but he can definitely spin the ball. Bolander has signed with Chipola Junior College in Florida, but says he wants to play Pro ball ASAP. This spring he has been up to 94 on several occasions. Josh Merino was drafted by the Rockies last year, but has not pitched at all this spring. After a dominating inning where he topped at 92 and showed two other potential plus pitches, he was shut down. Merino will pitch again Tuesday.

There were several other standouts including some of the top underclassmen in the Midwest at the event.

The dates and locations for both the 13u and 14u National Showcases have been announced and will bring in most of the top players from across the country to compete against one another.
