As JC Playoffs Intensify

Playoffs at almost every level of the junior-college world—state, region and district—begin (or continue) in earnest this week at locations all over the country, but one team in particular will be noteworthy because of its absence from post-season play.

Central Arizona College, which began the 2013 season at No. 1 in Perfect Game’s ranking of the nation’s Top 50 junior college teams, has already been eliminated from further competition leading up to the 2013 Junior College World Series. The Vaqueros (43-15) finished atop the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference regular-season standings, but failed to even advance past the first round of the four-team Arizona (Region 1) junior-college playoffs, losing in two straight games of their best-of-3 semi-final series to South Mountain.

With their unexpected loss, Central has dropped from No. 4 to No. 26 in PG’s latest ranking of the Top 50 teams (through games of Sunday). No. 41 South Mountain (38-20) will take on No. 20 Cochise (44-15) later this week in another best-of-3 series to determine Arizona’s representative in the Western District championship, which will also include teams from Regions 9 and 18. The winner of that tournament then advances to Grand Junction, Colo., May 25-June 1, to participate in the Junior College World Series—or National Junior College Athletic Association Division I national championship.

National championships will also be contested in Division II (May 25-June 1 in Enid, Okla.) and Division III (May 25-30 in Tyler, Texas), and playoffs at those levels will also intensify this week. California junior colleges are not members of the NJCAA, but 16 teams from an original field of 36 will advance to Super Regional competition later this week, with the state’s Final Four set for May 17-19 in Fresno.

Considerable national attention is expected to be focused on Lakeland, Fla., beginning Friday, when eight teams from that state will compete for the Region 8 championship, with the winner qualifying for the Junior College World Series. That regional should be hotly contested as it involves the top three teams in PG’s Top 50—No. 1 Miami-Dade College (35-8), No. 2 Tallahassee (46-8) and No. 3 State College of Florida-Manatee (42-10).
