Team of the day
Arizona State: The Sun Devils have been very solid this season and added yet another solid win to their already impressive resume with a road 7-5 triumph over in-state rival Arizona. Michael Benjamin had two hits and an RBI, while outfielder Jake Peevyhouse had a home run (2) in the contest. On the mound, the Sun Devils didn't pitch particularly well to start, but relievers Josh McAlister and Ryan Burr closed things out in impressive fashion, with Burr, a talented young power arm, striking out two in the finale frame.
Upset of the day
Dallas Baptist over Oklahoma: The Sooners hope to nail down an NCAA Regional host site down the stretch, but midweek losses such as the 2-0 setback to Dallas Baptist certainly don't help. OU starting pitcher Adam Choplick allowed a run on three hits in just an inning of work, while the Sooners offense was stymied by DBU starting pitcher Cory Taylor, who struck out seven, walked two and allowed just two hits in five shutout frames.
Player of the day
Jordan Parr, OF, Illinois: What a monstrous night Parr had at the plate for the Illini as they captured an 11-7 come-from-behind win over Southern Illinois. Parr went 3-for-5 with a double, two homers (6), three runs scored and seven RBIs in the victory.
Feeling good
Kansas State: Sitting on the NCAA postseason bubble, the Wildcats, like many teams in this situation, have little for error down the stretch. K-State leadoff hitter Ross Kivett went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, as the Wildcats captured a solid 6-3 road win over Creighton. Tanner Witt also had a hit and two RBIs in the contest, while first baseman RJ Santigate had two hits and two runs scored in the victory.
Houston: The Cougars have struggled immensely here the past couple of weeks, but finally rose to the occasion in a 6-4 home win over Louisiana-Lafayette, another NCAA bubble team heading down the stretch. UH reliever Chase Wellbrock rose to the occasion in the contest, fanning five and allowing just one hit in three scoreless frames. Meanwhile, third baseman Jonathan Davis went 2-for-4 with a double, home run, two runs scored and four RBIs.
North Florida: The Ospreys are in very good shape to reach the NCAA postseason right now, but even if they can't win the Atlantic Sun regular season title, they continue to rack up solid midweek wins. UNF relievers Evan Incinelli and Corbin Olmstead were fantastic with six shutout innings of work in a 5-4 home win over Georgia Southern. At the plate, third baseman Paul Karmeris chipped in a four-hit performance.
Arkansas: Fresh off a road series win over Georgia, the Razorbacks returned home and captured a solid 6-3 midweek win over Missouri State. The Hogs used eight pitchers in the win, including hard-throwing closer Colby Suggs, who earned his 8th save in the contest. At the plate, first baseman Dominic Ficociello had three hits and spark plug Jordan Farris continued his impressive ways with a pair of hits and runs scored.
UCLA: The Bruins put together a very wholesome 8-1 win over UC Irvine in midweek action. Freshman right-handed pitcher Cody Poteet struck out five, walked none and allowed just two hits in six shutout innings of work, while at the plate, third baseman Kevin Kramer went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.
Pittsburgh: The Panthers are trying to put together a postseason resume that will warrant an NCAA at-large bid in late May. Well, Tuesday's 7-6 road win over West Virginia certainly is another solid addition to their resume. Pitt second baseman Bennette Hill had a huge night at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a home run, a run scored and four RBIs.
Wanting a do-over
San Diego: There's no doubt the Toreros will need to finish the season on a high note to be sure of an at-large postseason bid, but they dropped a tough 6-4 decision to Cal State Northridge at home on Tuesday. USD right-handed pitcher Dylan Covey struggled in the contest, allowing six runs on three hits in three innings of work, while hard-hitting first baseman Kris Bryant went 0-for-4 in the contest.
Tennessee: The Volunteers can't wait for the 2014 campaign to begin. The Volunteers dropped another tough midweek contest to in-state foe Middle Tennessee State, this time 7-6 at home. UT starting pitcher Blake Thomas allowed three runs in three innings of work, while reliever Trevor Charpie struggled against the Blue Raiders, allowing three runs on three hits in just 2/3 of an inning.
Missouri: The Tigers just continue to have a tough first season in the Southeastern Conference, and as a whole. MU hard-throwing freshman right-handed pitcher Alec Rash struggled in a 9-7 loss to Southeaster Missouri State, allowing three runs in just three innings of work, while the bullpen didn't do much better in the contest. With the loss, MU drops to 15-25 on the season.
Loyola Marymount: Well, it's safe to say the Lions are in the midst of a skid at exactly the wrong time of the season. LMU starting pitcher Matt Florer allowed three runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings of work in a 3-1 road loss to Long Beach State. Meanwhile, the Lions were unable to do much against LBSU starting pitcher Ryan Millison, who allowed a run on two hits in four innings.
Top performances
Cody Dickson, LHP, Sam Houston State: The talented left-handed pitcher put together a solid start in a 2-1 road win over Texas-San Antonio. Dickson struck out three, walked two and allowed just two hits in five shutout innings of work.
Jaycob Brugman, OF, BYU: The Cougars hit the road and won their 22nd game of the season in a 15-7 triumph over Utah Valley. Brugman had a huge night at the plate, going 4-for-6 with a home run, four runs scored and four RBIs to lead the charge.
Michael Wills, LHP, Memphis: The Tigers got an outstanding performance form the senior hurler in a 6-0 win over Arkansas State. He struck out four, walked two and allowed just two hits in seven shutout frames in the victory. He also threw 96 pitches, 57 for strikes.
Dace Kime, RHP, Louisville: Kime put together an impressive starting performance as the Cardinals captured a 6-2 win over Western Kentucky at home. Kime struck out six, walked none and allowed just four hits in five shutout innings.
Josh Urban, RHP, Texas: The Longhorns certainly haven't had any issues pitching this season, though, the offense continues to be abysmal. Urban kept up that trend Tuesday night in a 1-0 win over Prairie View A&M. He allowed just four hits in five shutout frames.
Rafael Pineda, RHP, Texas A&M: The Aggies desperately need Pineda to be great down the stretch as they hope to finish strong. Pineda struck out five, walked one and allowed a run (not earned) on five hits in six innings in a 6-2 win over Grambling State.
JaCoby Jones, 2B, LSU: Jones put together a solid performance as the Tigers captured a 7-3 home win over McNeese State. He went 3-for-3 with an RBI, while freshman outfielder Mark Laird had a solid day at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. On the mound, starting pitcher Hunter Newman allowed just two hits in three shutout frames.
Jack Fischer, RHP, Wake Forest: The Demon Deacons captured a solid 2-1 home win over Elon with Fischer leading the charge. He struck out three, walked three and allowed just a run on four hits in 6 1/3 innings.
Andrew Knapp, C, California: The Golden Bears have had a rather tough campaign with a 21-23 overall record, but had a nice showing in a 13-2 win over Pacific. Knapp went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, home run three runs scored and two RBIs in the win.
Patrick Armstrong, 1B, UNLV: The Rebels had a huge night at the plate in a 20-6 win over UC Riverside with Armstrong leading the charge. He went 4-for-4 with a pair of homers, five runs scored and four RBIs. He also induced a pair of walks in the contest.
Jarrard Poteete, DH, Texas Tech: Though the Red Raiders have had a tough campaign thus far, they had something to cheer about Tuesday night in a 12-8 home win over New Mexico. Poteete had a really nice night at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a home run (2) and an RBI.
Robert Kahana, RHP, Kansas: The Jayhawks certainly took a step back last weekend, but perhaps a 1-0 midweek win over Wichita State will get them headed back the right direction. Kahana put together an impressive performance against the Shockers, striking out five, walking none and allowing just five hits in eight shutout frames.
Woody Wallace, C, Cincinnati: The Bearcats took care of business at home in a 15-6 win over Miami (Ohio). Wallace had an impressive night at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored and three RBIs.
Brendan Maghini, 1B, Fordham: Boy, what a wild one this was in the Northeastern part of the country on Tuesday, as the Rams captured an 18-12 win over Manhattan. Maghini had a really nice day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and four RBIs.
Alex Robinson, LHP, Maryland: The Terrapins got a really impressive start from the talented left-handed pitcher in an 11-3 home win over Towson. Robinson struck out seven, walked three and allowed a run on six hits in seven innings of work
Kevin Brantley, 3B, Hofstra: What an impressive night the Pride and Brantley had in a thrilling 10-9 triumph over Rutgers. Brantley was productive at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a double, two homers, three runs scored and three RBIs. He also induced a walk.
Mitchell Tolman, DH, Oregon: The Ducks hit the road and captured a 12-7 win over Seattle with Tolman and others leading the charge. Tolman had a huge night at the plate, going 3-for-4 in the contest with seven RBIs.
