From fringe to elite

Kendall Rogers
MORE: Andrew Heaney scouting profile | Scouting VideoPG Mock Draft (v.1)

Oklahoma State left-handed pitcher Andrew Heaney is sure-fire proof that hard work in the weight room can often lead to a magical turnaround.

As the Major League Baseball draft nears, Heaney is expected to be one of the first players chosen in the draft. Our latest Perfect Game mock draft, put together by scouting director Davis Rawnsley, has the talented lefty going No. 15 to the Cleveland Indians.

By the time June arrives, that may or may not be the case. But there’s one thing for sure, and that’s Heaney has evolved into one of the nation’s elite pitchers.

He wasn’t always elite, and he also wasn’t always 6-foot-2, 174 pounds. Out of high school in the State of Oklahoma, Heaney was ranked No. 1,017 in the nation in terms of prospects. He had a good fastball at 89 mph from the left side, but was just 6-foot-1, 150 pounds, and there were major concerns about his durability.
