With Tuesday's college baseball action in the books, here's our inside look back at the highlights and lowlights from around the country.
TEAM OF THE DAY: Sam Houston State
The Bearkats made a statement earlier this season with a home series win over San Diego. They also made another statement by taking care of Texas State in SLC play. Now, the Bearkats have recorded an impressive 2-1 win over Rice. SHSU starting pitcher Michael Oros struck out four and allowed just three hits in five shutout innings. It's also worth noting that relievers Allen Scott and Michael Burchett pitched very well, with Burchett recorded two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings of work to finish the game.
PLAYER OF THE DAY: Daniel Gossett, rhp, Clemson
Always be cautious when a team has struggled at some point in the season, but the Tigers might just be on the verge of turning the corner. The freshman right-handed pitcher was tremendous in an 11-0 win over Winthrop. Gossett struck out 13 and allowed just three hits in seven shutout innings
UPSET OF THE DAY: North Florida over Florida
It's obvious the Gators lacked some focus in a midweek bout against North Florida. The Gators played arguably their worst game of the season in a 10-5 setback to the Ospreys. Ospreys third baseman Andrew Karmeris had a home run in the game and finished the contest with two hits, while shortstop T.J. Gavlik recorded two hits and knocked in three runs. Meanwhile, for the Gators, Bobby Poyner had a rough night, allowing four runs without recording an out. The silver lining for the Gators was the return of right-handed pitcher Karsten Whitson, who struck out two batters in an inning of work.
FIVE BEST
Oregon State (18-8): The Beavers have played a solid brand of baseball lately and continued their winning ways with an 8-2 triumph over a solid Portland club. Third baseman Kavin Keyes had three hits in the game, while hot-hitting shortstop Tyler Smith knocked in three runs.
Georgia Tech (19-11): The Yellow Jackets have gone through their fair share of struggles lately, but perhaps they're getting things back on track. GT starting pitcher Cole Pitts struck out five and allowed just two hits in four shutout innings, as the Jackets defeated Kennesaw State 7-3 on the road. Outfielder Brandon Thomas led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.
New Mexico State (23-8): We've certainly given the Aggies grief in the past for getting off to fast starts and fading away, but this year appears to be different. NMSU continued its dominance over rival New Mexico with a 7-5 triumph. Aggies starting pitcher Adam Mott allowed just three runs on eight hits in six innings, while closer Scott Coffman tossed two perfect innings to close the contest.
East Carolina (20-8): The Pirates hit the road for midweek action and recorded a solid win over CAA favorite UNC Wilmington. ECU starting pitcher Jeff Hoffman led the way in the 5-0 win over the Seahawks. Hoffman struck out seven and allowed just five hits in 6 1/3 shutout innings. Meanwhile, reliever Tanner Merritt closed out the game by allowing no hits in 1 2/3 innings of work. Five Pirates had two hits in the game.
Dallas Baptist (18-9): It's about time to start cranking up the love meter for the Patriots. This team once again is for real. DBU picked up yet another solid midweek win with a 4-3 triumph over crosstown foe TCU. DBU starting pitcher Jay Calhoun tossed 4 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball, while reliever Michael Smith closed out the game by allowing just one run in 3 2/3 innings.
FIVE DISAPPOINTMENTS
Kansas State (14-14): The Wildcats just can't seem to catch a break these days, and Nebraska seems to be their midweek nemesis. Huskers starting pitcher Tyler King tossed four shutout innings and Tyler Niederklein tossed three shutout frames as NU cruised past the struggling Wildcats, 6-0. K-State starting pitcher Jared Moore was lifted from the game after allowing two runs in 2 2/3 innings.
Coastal Carolina (18-9): The Chanticleers had been playing a solid brand of baseball lately, but took a small step back in midweek action with a 3-0 loss to The Citadel. CCU starting pitcher Javier Reynoso allowed just two runs on three hits in five innings, but was outdueled by The Citadel starting pitcher Kevin Connell, who struck out five and allowed just four hits in seven shutout innings.
Florida (: What a rough night it was for the top-ranked Gators. Bobby Poyner had a tough relief appearance, allowing four runs without recording an out on the way to a 10-5 loss to North Florida. The Gators also struggled at the plate in the game, leaving nine runners on base despite recording 10 hits. UF must now quickly rebound with a Thursday-Saturday series against LSU coming up.
Fresno State (14-14): The Bulldogs' woes continued on Tuesday with a 9-5 setback to Santa Clara. Fresno State relievers JD Salles, Tyler Stirewalt and William Munroe struggled in the setback, while Santa Clara starting pitcher James Smith put together a solid start, allowing just two runs on six hits in eight innings of work. Fresno must find a way to turn things around.
Pepperdine (17-12): The Waves were in fantastic shape just a couple of weeks ago, but now things look a little bleak. Pepperdine starting pitcher Matt Maurer allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings in a 5-4 setback to USC. But more important is the fact the offense only mustered five hits against USC's midweek pitching. The Waves better get things together before this weekend's series against St. Mary's.
