HAVE YOUR SAY: Ask questions about the power rankings
Wow is all you can say about this week’s PG College Baseball positional/coach power rankings.
There wasn’t much movement after the first weekend of action for obvious reasons. Some players around the country simply took a little longer than others to get acclimated to the 2012 campaign.
In the head coach category, South Carolina skipper Ray Tanner still remains strong atop the rankings, while Maryland’s Erik Bakich and Oregon’s George Horton entered the rankings this week.
In terms of starting pitchers, Stanford’s Mark Appel and San Francisco’s Kyle Zimmer are the headliners, while in the bullpen, Cal Poly’s Nick Grim, Oregon’s Jimmie Sherfy and Rice’s John Simms made their debut.
At catcher, Florida Atlantic’s Mike Alabadejo and Kentucky’s Luke Maile are making their presence known, while the outstanding Sunshine State duo of Florida’s Mike Zunino and Miami’s Peter O’Brien lead the way.
Over at first base, North Carolina’s Cody Stubbs, Ohio State’s Josh Dezse and Arizona State’s Abe Ruiz made their debuts, while hot-hitting Stanford first baseman Brian Ragira takes over the top spot.
The middle infield is led by California’s Tony Renda, while Arizona State now has a dynamic duo in the rankings with shortstop Deven Marrero and second baseman Joey DeMichele leading the way.
North Carolina’s Colin Moran took over the third base position this week, while San Diego’s Kris Bryant, Arkansas’ Matt Reynolds and East Carolina’s Corey Thompson definitely are hot on his heels as we near another weekend of action.
Finally, the outfield is another very loaded position this season. Florida State’s James Ramsey and Texas A&M’s Tyler Naquin are off to an amazing start, while Purdue’s Tyler Spillner is making some serious noise after two weeks of play.
The PG Power Rankings are released each week throughout the regular season, with a final release coming after the College World Series.
