The skinny: Oregon coach George Horton had a grand plan when he made the move to the Ducks from perennial power Cal State Fullerton. Unfortunately, so far at least, that plan simply hasn’t worked out. The Ducks were expected to take their lumps in their inaugural campaign, but were expected to take a step forward last season. That didn’t happen, as they missed the NCAA postseason and batted a ridiculously low .258 as a squad. Though Ryon Healy serves as the only notable offensive returnee, the Ducks expect immediate contributions from freshmen Scott Heineman and Billy Flamion … Pitching-wise, the Ducks are without two talented arms in freshmen Cole Wiper and Sam Johnson, both out with elbow injuries. However, the staff still should be solid with Keudell and Jones leading the way, while No. 3 starter, freshman right-hander Jake Reed, was 93-95 during fall workouts. Talent, specifically on the mound, certainly won’t be an issue with this team. It’s all about putting everything together.
Expectation level: : Even with an outstanding pitching staff last season, the Ducks only managed to compile a 33-26 overall, plus a weak 11-16 mark in the Pac-10. UO will again have a solid pitching staff, though, not as much star power as last season. Still, the Ducks’ success boils down to getting production from a lineup with only one returning hitter who had a batting average of .300 or better last season. Oregon will have to overachieve to reach the NCAA postseason. |
