Right-handed pitcher Bobby Wahl just might be the University of Mississippi’s next great ace.
The Rebels, especially under coach Mike Bianco, have had some outstanding ace pitchers throughout the years. Mark Holliman and Will Kline certainly come to mind, while left-hander Drew Pomeranz was the most highly touted of the trio as a first-round pick to the Cleveland Indians in the 2010 MLB draft.
Good news for the Rebels, Wahl has a chance to be as good, or better, than Pomeranz.
But first things first, Wahl must overcome some challenges he has yet to face in college baseball and the Southeastern Conference. Though, certainly, the talent is there to become one of college baseball’s elite ace pitchers as a sophomore this spring.
“It’s tough to compare talent, but as an overall package, he might just be a little more advanced at this point than Pomeranz and other past aces were at the same time,” Bianco said. “Bobby hasn’t done it on the field as a starter because he hasn’t had the opportunity to do so, but he’s the total package. He has a chance to be exceptional, but there’s a long way to go.”
