Arizona State has no problem staying composed in adverse situations.
The Sun Devils went all the way through the 2011 baseball season unsure if they’d be able to compete in the NCAA postseason. The NCAA dragged its feet on a final decision to the ASU appeal, thus keeping the Devils eligible for the postseason.
Despite the distractions, the Sun Devils finished the campaign with a trip to the Austin Super Regional, where they were one game away from returning to the College World Series.
ASU again is in an adverse situation. And again, it has thrived under unique circumstances. The NCAA recently ruled the Sun Devils’ postseason ban appeal was denied, thus making them ineligible for the 2012 NCAA tournament. Interestingly, the Sun Devils kept an extremely impressive recruiting class together.
After all they’ve been through, the Sun Devils still have the nation’s No. 3 recruiting class. Chalk it up as a fantastic recruiting job by the ASU coaching staff.
“The NCAA deal certainly didn’t help things from a recruiting standpoint, but I think all the guys we recruited realized the NCAA issues wouldn’t affect them,” ASU recruiting coordinator and associate head coach Travis Jewett said. “All the families involved really asked some good questions about the situation. But in the end, they realized ASU still was a great place with good people and a strong vision.”
