Gonzales Overpowers Roosevelt

SAN ANTONIO, TX-- Tyler Gonzales showed off an explosive fastball that sat 89-92 MPH, occasionally climbing up to 93. The junior righty mixed his scorching heater with a hard low 80's slider with good tilting action and a 12-6 curve with late sudden break at 76 MPH. The devastating arsenal was simply too much for Roosevelt's hitters, as Gonzales allowed just one hit while striking out 14. 

Ever the competitor, Gonzales says he was happy with the outcome but felt like he could have done better. After the game Gonzales lamented "I wasn't really in command of my payoff pitch, the slider and I thought I could have done a better job of throwing first pitch strikes." Gonzales may not have impressed himself by throwing a first pitch strike on 57.7% of at-bats but he was certainly effective. Tyler says that command has been the aspect he has placed the most emphasis on improving this season. 

If Gonzales can harness his command his potential on the mound is extremely high, as he features a live arm and gets a sharp downhill angle on his pitches creating very good movement on his fastball with hard tailing action. When he's in sync he is able to drive the ball to the bottom corners of the strike zone with exceptional life and movement, setting up his hard slider really well. With a tall athletic frame Gonzales projects to increase his physical strength as he matures and couple possibly see an uptick in velocity. Then again, his future may not be on the mound, as Gonzales is a very high level prospect at shortstop, currently ranked as the #8 SS PG's class of 2012 rankings.

When asked about where on the diamond he sees himself Tyler said "I really like competing on the mound, as a SS and hitter I love the chance to make a big play or come through with a big hit in a clutch situation." Gonzales is committed to play his college ball at Southern California, where he may have an opportunity to be a two-way player. Then again, with an arm and stuff like his, it seems likely that a MLB organization may try to persuade him to forgo college baseball and begin his pro career early

. 

The five runs Gonzales got were plenty, and a big part of the offense was leadoff man Byran Myler, who went 2-for-4 with a pair of stolen bases. Gonzales also helped his own cause, going 1-for-3 with a Run and an RBI. Tyler Salas went 1-for-2 with a Run and cleanup hitter Regan Reed went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Kevin Madden also went 1-for-2 for the Mavericks 

The PG High School Baseball Road Trip continues tomorrow in Houston as two TAPPS powers St. Pius X and St. Thomas Catholic meet at 7:00 (Central).
