HOUSTON -- After not giving talented freshman right-handed pitcher John Simms much offensive help in a 5-3 loss to Stanford to open the season, Rice was determined to change course with junior righty Matthew Reckling on the mound.
The Owls succeeded in that quest, as they defeated Stanford 7-1 to even the series at 1-1. But while the offense took a step forward in Game 2, Reckling was the definite headliner.
Reckling finished his sophomore campaign last season with a 6.32 ERA in just 15 2/3 innings. And as a freshman two seasons ago, the righty had a 5.84 ERA in 20 innings. This season, Reckling is primed to make a leap forward.
The right-hander was consistently 88-92 on Saturday, and displayed good composure in some tough situations. Video of Reckling's performance is included, but not alone.
Other videos feature Stanford left-handed pitcher Chris Reed, who was consistently 92-94 MPH, Rice third baseman Anthony Rendon and Rice outfielder Jeremy Rathjen. Reed will continue to rise as a prospect if he can get his control in order, Rendon is the top prospect for the upcoming draft, and Rathjen is a rising prospect despite a long swing.
