Chet Lemon’s Juice Win Florida Qualifier

David Rawnsley
Chet Lemon’s Juice defeated Orlando Baseball Academy Connect 2011 1-0 Monday afternoon in Fort Myers to win the 2010 WWBA Florida Qualifier.

The Championship Game was the 7th game in essentially 3 days for both teams and the hitter’s showed their fatigue instead of the pitchers. Both teams collected only 2 hits and the defense for both teams came through when needed.

Orlando RHP Corey Tufts allowed only a harmless 2-out walk through the first 3 innings, leaving the Juice with only 1 hit to show for their last 8 innings dating back to the first inning of their semi-final victory over the Tampa Crush. Juice SS Richie Martin opened up the 4th inning with a clean single to left field, however, and then stole second base with 2 out. 1B Corey Spano came through with a clutch Rbi single to put the Juice up 1-0.

Orlando had their best chance to score in the 5th inning off RHP Paul John Roundtree, who had relieved starter LHP Corey Stump to begin the 3rd inning. LF Tyler Shenk reached base with 2 outs on an infield error and promptly stole second. DH Tanner Stanley slapped a single to right field but Juice RF Jonathan Camp made a perfect throw to catcher Cameron Toole to nail Shenk at the plate.

Roundtree got the win with 4 innings of scoreless relief. Spano came in for the 7th inning and retired the side in order, including 2 strikeouts, to get the save.

Martin was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. He led the event in runs scored out of his leadoff spot with 7, including the lead run in the semi-finals and the only run in the finals, along with playing outstanding defense at shortstop. Orlando CF/LHP Tanner Stanley (a tournament leading 9 hits and 5 scoreless innings on the mound) was a strong consideration for the award.

Orlando RHP Andrew Ornes was named the Most Valuable Pitcher. Ornes went 2-0, 0.00 in 9 innings of work over 3 relief appearances, including a clutch 5 inning effort in Orlando’s 10 inning semi-final win over Ostinger’s Baseball Academy. Chet Lemon RHP Thomas Renda (2-0, 0.00, 10 IP) was the runner up.
