Frame/Setup

Houston features an athletic build at 6-foot-3, 205-pound frame. The shortstop has continued to add strength, including significant gains over the last year. The body moves with fluidity and control on both sides of the ball. At the plate, Houston utilizes an even base stance with an upright posture and relaxed hand setup. A simple timing mechanism creates quality separation with the hands pre-pitch. The ability to stay calm and relaxed allows Houston to fire the barrel on time consistently. A clean path to contact has some loft to it and gets extended well out front. There is hand speed and barrel feel present that only continues to get better.

Tools

Houston possesses one of the more well-rounded skill sets in this year’s class. On the defensive side, the glove really stands out. Athleticism and quick feet allow him to move with fluidity in all directions with range that stands out. The hands are extremely confident and catch the ball consistently. He works through hops well and consistently gets the hop he wants. The glove is arguably the best in the class and will play shortstop at the next level. The arm also plays from the left side. It grades out as above-average and can create easy carry across the diamond. Offensively, the bat has been more hit-over-power going into the year but has made more strides in the power department this spring. Houston has set a career best in home runs and will likely hit more this year than the previous two springs combined. The hit tool has performed this spring too. Houston features a near 1:1 K:BB ratio with slightly more free passes than strikeouts. An above-average run tool rounds out the impressive skill set. Houston has yet to be caught stealing this spring in 17 tries.

“The Buzz”

The glove alone made Houston a potential first rounder entering the year, but the performance of the bat has generated some Top-10 buzz. He has tools on both sides of the ball and should stick up the middle long term. There is a mix of athleticism and hit ability, while the growth in power has taken him to the next level. It would not be a surprise if Houston winds up selected within the first five picks come July.

Summation

There is so much to like when it comes to Houston. He took over the starting shortstop job at Wake his freshman year and has continued to get better each spring. He performed on the Cape last summer and has really taken off this spring. The defensive ability gives the profile a high floor, while the potential of the bat gives Houston big time upside. Plenty of teams will want the talents of Houston and he should go very early on day one.
