The defense, offense and weather were all hot for SWBA American 13U in its 9-1, run-rule, championship victory over the Barwis Dragons.

In the heat, SWBA struck early with a run off a sac fly in the first from shortstop Fernando Vazquez. The runs started piling on in the third as SWBA racked up 5. By the time they had reached the fifth inning, SWBA tacked on 3 more runs to seal the run-rule win.

Kaden Beard, the centerfielder who knocked in three runs for SWBA, explained a few of the challenges he faced in the championship game and throughout the weekend.

“Being a big kid, you know, they throw a lot of off-speed,” Beard said. “[I’m] always going to sit back on those… having to check down balls in the outfield… It’s been super hot everyday. Everybody was super hot and sweaty. [We] always needed to stay hydrated.”

One of Beard’s teammates, right-handed pitcher Archer Ellis, contributed most to the team’s win - displaying his two-way talent. Ellis threw 89 pitches in 5 complete innings, striking out 6 batters using a mid-70s fastball and a high-60s curveball. At the plate, he added 4 RBI - 2 came with a double in the bottom of the third, the other 2 came in the last at-bat of the game one coming in on a wild pitch, and the last with a RBI single.

“Kill the ball,” Ellis said, explaining his strategy at the plate. “[My] strategy on the mound today was to throw as hard as I can - and just mix in off-speeds and just get them out...I’m going to be proud of my team. I just want to thank all of them.”

With this win, SWBA American 13U has now qualified for the 2024 PG 13U BCS National Championship happening at Boombah Sports Complex in Sanford, FL June 22-27.
