Kernels Foundation Scout Notes: Days 1-2

The 19th annual Kernels Foundation Championship kicked off Friday night in greater Cedar Rapids, and my first stop was to see Cangelosi 2022 Black kick off their tournament.


Julius Sanchez (2022, LaSalle, Ill.) got the start and worked an uneventful three frames, striking out five with a couple walks. He’s a big, physical right-hander with a good combo of deception and present stuff, hiding the ball well through the back and adding some extra with a high front side working through. He gets over his front side and downhill well albeit with a more gated stride, and releases from a near-vertical slot. The fastball worked in the 88-92 mph range, sitting right at 90-91 more or less, with good carry up in the zone and plane when down. He can vary the shape of his breaker successfully, leaving it more of a true 11/5-shaped CB in the mid-70s as well as tightening it up to throw more of a tilting slider look closer to 80 mph, either iteration with good depth and spin, with the overall makings of an above-average bat-missing pitch long term. He’s committed to Illinois.
