To truly appreciate the playing style of the Texas Riptide 14U-A team, one needs to look no further than how they rally around each other. They are a driven group that consistently looks adversity in the eye and powers through it. They are tremendously gifted individuals who epitomize team play. Each is an outstanding teammate to the other and they play with great joy.



Those sometimes intangible hallmarks that most successful teams possess only paint the outward picture of this Bayou City bunch. These girls can play. They won the 14U-A championship at the OKC Challenge and were only really threatened a couple of times; they played to a 3-3 tie in their second pool play game against the Louisiana Thunderbolts, and they were behind 4-0 against a very good ProForm HTX Premier club before rallying to an 8-6 win. They beat an excellent Alabama Firecrackers 06 team 3-0 in a highly-competitive championship contest. They went 5-0-1 and outscored their opponents 41-20 in those six contests.

When Riptide needed pitching and defense to win, they pitched and played defense. When they needed to out-slug an opponent to win, they out-slugged them. When they needed a bunt or a stolen base, they figured that out, too. They are multi-dimensional, athletically gifted, and understand the nuances of the game. They are game savvy and play, both mentally and physically, at a much higher level than their 14U designation.

Riptide played with a focus, enthusiasm, and passion usually reserved for teams much older and more experienced. They built momentum throughout each contest and capitalized almost each and every time an opponent made a mistake. They forced the action with aggressive baserunning and almost overwhelmed the opposition with the pressure they kept applying. Perhaps most noticeable about the Texas Riptide is the mental toughness they bring to the field in each contest they play. They can beat just about any opponent with their natural ability alone, but their will to win helps gets them to the winner’s circle, also.

This is a fun bunch to watch. For a younger age group team, they “get it”. They could easily “play up” in competition and be successful. They have a deep and talented club, and they play the game the right way. Congrats to Texas Riptide for a well-earned and highly deserved PG 14U-A OKC Challenge championship.
