2021 MLB Draft: Top 300

Following a tumultuous 2020 MLB Draft, 2021 is shaping up to be one of the deeper classes ever given the talent already available coupled with so much more talent being hold overs last year due to the five round draft. The summer circuit is more different than it has ever looked with a large portion of collegiate scouting events such as the Cape Cod League and Team USA being canceled due to the pandemic. Most of the major high school events were held with the PG National, 17u WWBA, East Coast Pro, and Area Codes, albeit with some major changes to the format of various events. All of this context coupled with the fact that Major League Baseball put forth travel restrictions on scouts, only recently were teams able to send out five scouts on the road at once, made for a very strange scouting cycle. That being said, the draft will still take place in 2021 and it will be the latest the draft has been held in its history, taking place from July 11th through July 13th. The result of that date changes means even more sophomores will be eligible for the draft, adding names like Pete Hansen, Jerrion Ealy, and Connor Walsh to what was already a very loaded draft class.

The top of the draft is looking particularly strong in talent as two college arms sit at the top in Vanderbilt’s Kumar Rocker and LSU’s Jaden Hill. Rocker’s rotation-mate Jack Leiter is an eligible sophomore and he’s not far behind as a crux of college positional talent could also go very early in UCLA’s Matt McLain, Florida’s Jud Fabian, Miami’s Adrian Del Castillo, and Louisville’s Alex Binelas. Smaller schools are represented well as South Alabama’s Ethan Wilson, Sam Houston State’s Colton Cowser, and Memphis’ Hunter Goodman currently have first round grades. On the prep side, you’ll recognize a lot of names from the Perfect Game All-American Classic as Jordan Lawlar is the top prep on the board followed by Ian Moller, Andrew Painter, and Marcelo Mayer join him in the top ten. Fellow top ranked prospect Brady House is also in the first round joined by fellow preps coming off very strong summers including James Wood, Josh Baez, Alex Mooney, Joe Mack, Benny Montgomery, Chase Petty, and Harry Ford. There’s a lot of depth throughout and this is just the first iteration of the PG Draft List. There will be further updates as we approach the draft with the list eventually expanding to 610 names, roughly the amount of picks through 20 rounds of the draft.
