A pair of shortstops who were playing in the consolation bracket have impressed this week as Alex Ulloa (2021, Cutler Bay, Fla.) and Jordan McCants (2021, Cantonment, Fla.) are notable up-the-middle prospects.

Ulloa has been pretty productive over the course of the week as he’s been putting balls in play with authority and working counts to get into good hitting situations. The Oklahoma State commit is an aggressive hitter normally, jumping on early fastballs to ambush and hit the ball hard like he did in the opening game on Monday morning as he launched a first pitch fastball to the fence in left centerfield for a triple. Ulloa has an efficient stroke that does a good job at using his base well to drive the ball to both gaps with authority. He’s a smooth defender too and one that does it with a very good internal motor that shows on things like knowing where his feet have to be, how much time he has to throw to first, and the quickness of his actions around the bag. Ulloa has been a consummate performer and the tools match the performance more times than not.

McCants is a strong shortstop as well as he’s light on his feet while showing excellent athleticism, speed, and overall leadoff man tools. He’s a switch hitter and uses the whole field with that approach as the swing is very compact and quick to the ball as he sprays the ball around the yard well. The Mississippi State commit is a plus runner and will get a little slap happy as he will fall victim to letting his legs do the work but shows a smooth, line drive stroke when he pulls the ball too as he drove a single into right field from the left side to open up the game on Tuesday. The quick twitch athleticism allows him to be a nuisance on the base paths and McCants contact skills coupled with the speed and defense make him an intriguing name to watch moving forward.
