Mid-Atlantic Scout Notes: 7/11 & 7/12

Action continued on Saturday with multiple events scattered throughout the Northeast. Plenty of impactful players made us take notice of how they have upped their respective games during the long layoff.

Vanderbilt commit Tommy Finnegan (2022, Ocean City, NJ) got the start in Baseball Performance Center’s second pool play game of the event. The 6-7 righthander is an impressive athlete with clean, efficient movement patterns that he is able to repeat despite his extra-large frame. Finnegan looks to have added strength since our last look, showing a thicker built lower half than we remember with the same clean high three-quarters arm slot. He worked 3 full innings in this look, pounding the zone with downhill plane and occasional cutting action to his fastball. The fastball worked in the upper 80s for the duration of his outing, topping out at 90 mph on Saturday. The Ocean City, NJ native is able to command both sides of the plate fairly well, using his fastball/slider combination to disrupt hitters timing. The slider has the makings of a future plus pitch, tunneling it well with both depth and horizontal tilt. There is still plenty of projection remaining for Finnegan and one would suspect that a velocity tick is coming sooner than later.
