West Elite Championship Scout Notes: Day 1 & 2

On day three, AZ T-Rex Easton narrowly fell to NW Futures but infielder Emilio Barreras Rojo (2022, Casa Grande, Ariz.) has continued to impress this summer with his mature approach at the plate and fluid actions in the infield. Barreras Rojo has an upright and open stance that he sinks down and back into as he loads, along with a toe tap trigger. His barrel gets on plane quickly and he fires through with a very flat path. He possesses good bat speed and has the ability to drive the ball into either gap. The pitch recognition is also a positive sign as he’s strung together some very professional looking at bats. In the field he moves well to both sides and has the versatility to play just about anywhere you need him too, however, his strong arm and developing length suggest that he could fit in perfectly at the hot corner. So far this tournament he’s hitting .417 at the plate with a run and an RBI. 




Uncommitted southpaw Nolan Lopez (2021, Scottsdale, Ariz.) is a gem of an uncommitted find as threw five shutout innings for Team Dinger 2021. He keeps things simple on the hill with a straight up and down motion and a short arm action that releases from an over the top slot. He takes small side steps to his leg lift and stays compact throughout his motion. He will occasionally miss arm side with his fastball; however, he was able to make adjustments pitch by pitch and pound the zone with consistency. The fastball sat around 85-87 while touching 88 mph in his first few innings of work, then tapered off slightly towards the end sitting 83-85. He mixes in a large 12-6 to at times high 11-5 shaped Tyler Skaggs-type curveball that he drops in for strikes. The pitch has a high enough spin rate to miss bats and shows great potential, yet, it will need to develop further to become a plus secondary pitch. Nonetheless, his length, velocity, and command make him a very interesting uncommitted arm for the class of 2021.
