17u Elite Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3

The final day of the PG 17U National Elite Championship got started with some intense semifinal matchups. Thrive Baseball from Texas came to Hoover with a roster of power arms, smooth defenders and skilled hitters. Their playoff run ultimately came to an end in the semifinal against the vaunted East Cobb Astros.

Ryan Johnson (2021, Red Oak, TX) got the start and showed some intriguing arm strength. The Dallas Baptist commit has a prototypical pitcher's frame with long levers, lower half strength and a quick arm. Johnson’s fastball worked in the upper 80s with arm side life to the bottom of the zone for the duration of his outing, topping out 92 mph. There is plenty of projection remaining and coupled with the loose, easy arm action, one would think more velocity is in the tank. The secondary offerings are still developing but do show the potential to be a true swing-and-miss pitch with refinement. The changeup is further along at present, showing replicated arm speed and fade when in sync. Johnson ultimately took the loss going five innings and striking out 9 hitters but the upside is vast and it will be interesting to see how he progresses.
