Talent Takes Over Fort Myers

For the third year in a row, Perfect Game will host the WWBA Sophomore World Championship, held in various ballparks across Fort Myers, Florida from Sept. 27-30.

Games will be played at multiple MLB Spring Training complexes, as well as a number of high school complexes in the area.



86 teams, mostly spread across the East Coast, will compete for one of the most coveted titles of the entire year. Among a long list of teams that call Florida, Georgia, and New Jersey home, there are also teams from as far west as Colorado, as well as a number of Midwest teams from Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Illinois, and one team traveling from Puerto Rico.

Elite Squad, based out of Pembroke Pines, Fla., has won the first two renditions of the WWBA Sophomore World Championship, in 2017 and 2018. The squad will be back this year with their 2022 group, and are again one of the teams to beat.

Logan Forsythe (2022, D’Iberville, Miss.) is the headliner for Elite Squad, a righthanded pitcher committed to Mississippi State. Forsythe is the No. 49 prospect in the class. He is joined on Elite Squad by fellow top-100 prospect Raymond Bermudez (2022, Hollywood, Fla.), the No. 92 prospect. Bermudez is an outfielder committed to play college ball at Miami. Bryant Zayas (2023, Hialeah, Fla.), the No. 37 overall prospect in the 2023 class, will play up with Elite Squad 2022’s. Zayas, the No. 8 shortstop in his class, is committed to North Carolina State.

The overall talent at the tournament is rather incredible. 24 of the top 100 prospects in the 2022 class will be in Fort Myers, including seven of the top 50. 18 of the top 100 in the 2023 class will also be in attendance.

Brandon Barriera (2022, Cocunut Creek, Fla.), a lefthanded pitcher committed to Vanderbilt, is the top overall prospect at the Sophomore World Championship. The No. 3 prospect in his class, Barriera will lend his talents to Cannons Baseball Academy 2022 American, another team that will have a say in how things shake out over the weekend. Barriera is joined on the team by No. 80 prospect Evan Dobias (2022, Sunrise, Fla.) and No. 81 Adrian Dominguez (2022, Miami, Fla.), a righthanded pitcher committed to Virginia and third baseman committed to Miami, respectively.

5 Star National 2022 Burress is yet another team descending upon Fort Myers with a trio of top-100 prospects. No. 11 Sal Stewart (2022, Miami, Fla.) is the No. 1 third baseman in his class, and is committed to Vanderbilt. Nicolas Perez (2022, Isabela, P.R.), the No. 12 prospect in the 2022 class, will combine with Stewart to make what could be the toughest left side of an infield in the entire tournament. Perez, the No. 2 shortstop in the class, is a Florida State commit. Blaydon Plain (2022, Greenville, Fla.) is the No. 100 overall prospect in the 2022 class and the No. 5 first baseman. He adds even more firepower to the 5 Star National 2022 Burress infield. Plain is committed to play at Florida.

Although the 2022 class may get more fanfare, as they are one year closer to the draft and getting to their college commitments, 5 Star National 2023 Dobbs will bring as much talent as any 2022 team in attendance.

Drew Burress (No. 10 overall prospect, 2023), Riley Jackson (No. 20), Brady Neal (No. 27), James Hays (No. 46), and Connor Crisp (No. 53) will all suit up for the team.

The 86 teams traveling to Fort Myers will be split across 20 pools of four teams each, as well as one pool of six. The top team from each pool of four and the top two teams of the pool of six will be deemed pool winners, and will then advance to a 22-team single elimination playoff bracket.
