CSA powers way to Freshman Championship

MARION, Iowa – Chicago Scouts Association rode their hot bats to a victory at the 2019 WWBA Midwest Freshman Championship, knocking off the Cangelosi Sparks 2023 Black in the finale by a score of 14-5. CSA went undefeated in the tournament, using a plethora of runs to blow past the rest of the field.

CSA started hot in the championship game on Sunday, jumping to a 7-0 lead before their defense even had to take the field. After five straight free passes to open the game, Ryan Bakes created separation with a two-run single to make it 4-0. Two more run-scoring singles and a passed ball put the exclamation point on the inning, and CSA didn’t look back.

After a scoreless second and third inning, CSA put together another seven-run inning, highlighted by a bases-clearing double from tournament MVP Zion Rose. Rose was able to drive a ball deep to the gap in left-center field, tallying another three RBI for his stat line and cementing the championship for his team.

A Louisville commit, Rose is currently ranked as the best player in Illinois’ 2023 class, and the No. 18 player in the class as a whole. Rose finished the tournament with eight hits, including two triples, two doubles, eight stolen bases and 10 RBI. Rose was just one of a number of CSA hitters that had strong weekends and head coach Andy Maki knew that could be the case with this team.

“It was something that was expected because we knew this group could really hit,” said Maki. “We noticed that in our tryouts and, the way we saw it was the way that it turned out which was really nice.”

This young group certainly showed cohesiveness and power this weekend, and Maki believes the group can sustain the success from this weekend all the way through the Kernels Foundation Championship when they become seniors. With a roster full of members of the 2023 and 2024 classes, they certainly have the time to get better and prepare.

“The success this group is going to have is going to be great. They have the talent run away with all of these championships that they come to. I see this group as being able to make it through Kernels and getting down to Jupiter when they make it there [to Kernels].”

The MV-Pitcher of the 2019 WWBA Midwest Freshman Championship was Nick Lacson. Lacson tossed six strong innings for CSA in the quarterfinals, striking out 10 batters and allowing just one hit.

Iowa Select captures Upperclass title

MARION , Iowa – Iowa Select 2020 Nordgren/Brune finished off an undefeated run at the 2019 PG Elite Midwest Championship, knocking off the QC Sticks in the championship game by a score of 7-1.

Iowa Select opened the scoring in the first inning when Alec Patino drove in Iowa commit Coy Sarsfield and Iowa Select did not look back on the offensive side of the ball. Iowa Select would go on to add one more in the second and a pair in the third, jumping out to a commanding 4-1 lead.

After pitching dominated the middle of the ballgame, tournament MVP Andrue Henry put the exclamation point on a dominant weekend, driving a ball to deep left field to score the final two runs of the game. Henry, who is a Kirkwood Community College commit, totaled eight hits, four doubles and nine RBI on the weekend.

While the offense was at full throttle on Sunday, the Iowa Select pitching staff was able to keep the QC Sticks from making much of any headway on the scoreboard. After the first inning, the trio of Nile Foss, Joseph Harris and Coy Sarsfield combined to hold the Sticks scoreless over the final six innings. Harris was the biggest bright spot, collecting four strikeouts and allowing just two hits over three innings of work.

The QC Sticks got some excellent pitching as well in tournament MV-Pitcher Jared Rasmussen. Rasmussen tossed seven strong innings in tournament play, allowing just three hits while striking out eight batters.

Playing in their own backyard, it is fitting that Iowa Select would grab a tournament championship in the final Perfect Game Prospect Meadows event of the season. After what has been a whirlwind fall in Eastern Iowa, Iowa Select finishes on top.
