Championship Monday in the Upperclass division at the Fall National Championship Protected by G-Form began on the Indians side of the Goodyear complex with two absolute nail biter semifinal games. CBA Marucci 2020 was able to finally solve the potent Tomateros De California lineup thanks to a stellar performance by Nevada commit Cameron Walty (2020, Elk Grove, Calif.). Walty pitched a complete game shutout allowing just four hits while fanning seven. On the hill he has a short arm action from a three-quarters to high three-quarters arm slot and his motion stays quick and compact throughout. His fastball maintained its velocity throughout his outing sitting 87-89 while touching 90 mph on a couple of occasions. There’s some slight arm-side run to his fastball as well and that run becomes more prevalent when he locates arm side. His breaking ball is an 11-to-5 shaped curveball that possesses good depth and becomes a plus pitch when he’s able to get it out in front and across his body. There’s a slight hump in his breaking ball that falls off the table, but its bite has a tendency to weaken as it’s left over the plate. Walty also mixes in an 82 mph changeup that he prefers to reserve for lefthanded hitters, and he shows some nice command with the pitch, turning it over and having it fade away from lefty bats. CBA Marucci 2020 scored just one run in the ballgame and that’s all it took to advance to the championship in the stadium.

GBG Marucci Navy 2020 walked off on Wilson Sandlot to punch their ticket to the championship game. The walkoff hero was TCU commit Devan Ornelas (2020, Chatsworth, Calif.)who went 2-for-4 in the game with a pair of doubles, including his solid opposite field shot over the left fielder’s outstretched glove to win it for GBG. Ornelas has fantastic speed and good hands with a strong overall feel for the barrel. He gives himself a nice power profile for his frame thanks to solid coil between his upper and lower halves, and his backside stays tall as his lower half and back hip fire through the zone with ferocity generating projectable hand speed.

USD commit Jack Costello (2020, Simi Valley, Calif.) also impressed at the plate going 1-for-3 with a double of his own down the left field line. Costello has a large, athletic and physical frame that thoroughly projects to the next level. He has an open stance that he slightly crouches down into, and his lower half is active and strong as it helps drive his quick hands through the zone. There’s plenty to like out of Costello’s power projection and quiet violence at the plate, however, his plate discipline and approach still have some maturing to do heading into his senior year.

Uncommitted shortstop Tyler Kearney (2021, Phoenix, Ariz.) sparked college coaches’ curiosity by showcasing his good hands at the plate, as well as generating plenty of hard contact throughout the tournament. In the semifinal game for Wilson Sandlot he went hitless but still generated some nice back-spun baseballs to his pull side that forced him to keep his hands inside on good pitches. There’s plenty of room in Kearney’s 6-foot, 165-pound frame to fill into and it’s hard not to imagine his high upside given his approach at the plate and solid set of hands. He’s an interesting follow moving forward.

In the championship game inside Goodyear Ballpark GBG Marucci Navy 2020 received a complete game shutout from Columbia commit Brandon Madrigal (2020, Moorpark, Calif.). Madrigal allowed just three hits and two walks while fanning six through his seven innings of work. Madrigal has a shorter arm action from a three-quarters to high three-quarters slot and his separation and flex T stays high as he pushes down the mound with violent drop-and-drive actions. His fastball sits around 84-86 mph while toughing 87 and he was filling up all four quadrants of the plate on command. His 81 mph changeup has solid fading actions away from lefthanded bats. He also throws a large shaped 11-to-5 curveball that possesses a slight hump but has impressive bite down and promises to be a plus pitch as his arm continues to develop. GBG Marucci Navy 2020 defeated CBA Marucci 2020 2-0 to win the PG Upperclass Fall National Championship.
