Hurricanes take 14u Super25

SANFORD, Fla. – In a game that was a wire-to-wire thriller, the Florida Hurricanes 14u Platinum edged out the Canes NC 14U - Gallaher in an extra-inning classic, winning the 14u Super25 National Championship by of score of 10-9. The win capped off a sterling 8-0 run through the tournament, and in each of the eight contests the Hurricanes played they pushed at least seven runs across home plate.

“The whole week was a long week of baseball, but there was some good teams here, some good competition,” said Florida Hurricanes coach Theron Todd. “When you get down to the playoffs, it’s all about details and whoever has pitching left over and who can execute offensively. You saw that in the semifinals, and obviously, in the finals. It’s good baseball and the kids competed for both sides. Very good competition.”

The contest featured scoring early and often. After Canes NC 14u - Gallaher plated two runs in the top of the first inning, Austin Schrowe answered the call for the Florida Hurricanes 14u Platinum with a two-run home run to highlight a four-run bottom of the first.

With the bases loaded in the second inning, Hayden Gustavson torched a two-run double down the left field line, bringing his total to three in the contest.

Canes NC 14U - Gallaher loaded the bases with nobody out and responded with three runs in the top of the third to cut the Hurricanes lead to just one. With two outs, Macon Winslow drove in two runs with a hard single through the right side of the infield.

With two down in the bottom of the third, Devan Meran looked to have a sure-fire two RBI double, but Mason Chapman Mays made a phenomenal diving grab in the right-center gap to keep the game at 6-5.

In the top of the fourth inning, Canes NC 14U - Gallaher was able to take advantage of back-to-back defensive miscues, capitalizing on both errors.

After forcing the Canes NC 14U - Gallaher to go back to the bullpen, the Florida Hurricanes 14u Platinum struck immediately. Gustavson tied the game with a double to left field, his second of the game. The Hurricanes retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly to left field.

The Canes lead off the seventh inning with a double to left field by Drew Lanphere. With their backs against the wall and down to their final out, the Canes managed to plate a run on a throwing error, scoring Lanphere from third base.

Dylan Kelly stepped up to the challenge and shut down the Hurricanes in the bottom of the inning, sending the hitters down in order to force extra innings with a Super25 title on the line.

With Reid Haire looking to swipe second base, Trace Humberger scored from third base on a pickoff play to regain the lead at 9-8. The inning ended with a double play and Haire getting tagged out on a bang-bang play at the plate.

Meran and Oscar Hernandez reached base safely to begin the bottom of the eighth inning. Jake Kulikowski moved Meran and Hernandez into scoring position with a soft groundout back to the pitcher. Gustavson decided to play hero with another two RBI single, this one a walk-off in the national championship game. Gustavson’s four hit and six RBI performance helped finalize his case to be named the MVP of the 14u PG Super25 National Championship.

“I was struggling all week and I was starting to see the ball better and better as it as it went on,” said Gustavoson after the game. “I knew they weren’t going to try and throw to me with first base open so I knew I was sitting on something off-speed. He left it up and I hit a line drive. And I mean, it just helped our team get the win and that’s all that really matters.”

The Hurricanes’ Augusto Calienes was named the event’s Most Valuable Pitcher after tossing a complete game in his team’s 9-4 win over the Bronx Bombers in the semifinals to advance to the title game. Calienes allowed four runs, but none were earned, on seven hits and a walk, striking out six in seven innings.
