COLLEYVILLE, Texas – Texas Twelve Maroon 2022 captured the 2019 15u WWBA South National Championship on Wednesday afternoon, beating Performance Baseball Texas 15u by a score of 8-2. Going a perfect 8-0 for the tournament, Texas Twelve used dominant pitching and timely hitting to race to a championship trophy.

After cruising to a semifinal win Wednesday morning, Texas Twelve picked up where they left off in the title game, scoring a pair of runs in each of their first two trips to the plate.

In the first inning, Texas Twelve was able to capitalize on a bases loaded walk and a Perfomance Baseball error to take the 2-0 lead. In the second inning, Connor Weigman delivered the first big swing of the game with a double to center field to extend the lead to four.

The game went back and forth from that point on, and Texas Twelve was able to capitalize on more mistakes and get those timely hits to extend the lead for good. Head coach Jeremy Knox attributes the success to an increased level of focus.

“The focus level just went up and they were able to execute,” Knox said while smiling with his team. “I think it’s a really great tribute to the kids.”

One player that had that increased focus throughout the entire tournament was MVP Canon Chester. Chester finished the week 13-for-22, collecting six RBI and getting on base at a .679 clip. Chester contributes a lot of his success to his aggressive approach at the plate.

“I was sitting on the first-pitch fastball in a majority of my at-bats, and if I didn’t get it I was doing a good job of letting the pitch go,” said Chester. “I was just looking for a pitch I could drive and it really ended up working out for me this week.”

Chester was the highlight of a lineup that produced big numbers throughout the entire event.

“This tournament really built a lot of confidence for a lot of people,” Chester added. “It wasn’t just me that did well, the whole team did great this week. I think we will show up next week and do it again.”

Following the big championship victory at Colleyville Heritage High School on Wednesday, this Texas Twelve team will open play at the 2019 15u WWBA National Championship on Friday in Georgia. The performance in Texas certainly did build that confidence, but Coach Knox says they wont take anybody lightly.

“There are some tough teams here in Texas that we have beat, but there are some tough teams over there (in Georgia) as well. Hopefully this will help ignite the fire for us and help us play well.”

Though Performance Baseball Texas 15u came up just one win short of a championship this week, they did receive an outstanding performance from tournament MV-Pitcher Grayson Murry. Murry tossed 9 2/3 innings during the event, giving up no earned runs and striking out 15 batters. The tall righthanded pitcher allowed only six hits as it was truly an incredible individual performance for his team.
