CA Identifier Underclass Notes

Much like the PG Pre-Draft Identifier Showcase at Los Angeles Valley College, the PG Identifier Showcase at East Los Angeles College showcased strong pitching performances.

Starting on the mound for team black was athletic framed righthander Ty Collins (2020, Los Angeles, Calif.). Collins was arguably the best athlete at the showcase posting impressive measurables in many aspects of his game. He ran the best 60-yard dash at the event with a 6.50-second time, then led all outfielders in velocity with his throws to the plate sitting around 90 mph. On the bump, Collins was tied for the highest pitching velocity at the event sitting around 87-88 mph. He possesses a slow methodical motion with a high leg lift and quick arm action. From his three-quarter slot, his fastball has a ton of action as it cuts and sinks pretty drastically at times. He struck out two while not allowing a hit.

The other 87-88 mph hurler at the event was southpaw Rick Tiedemann (2019, Lakewood, Calif.). Tiedemann has a long and lengthy frame with a longer arm action and high three-quarters arm slot. He works quick down the mound and really reaches behind his back with his throwing arm into separation. Tiedemann mixed his pitches well showcasing a sinking straight change that sat around 72 mph and a low 11-to-5 shaped breaking ball.

Scoring opened in the second when team maroon capitalized on a trio of walks issued to load the bases. Alonso Reyes (2022, Culver City, Calif.) and USC commit D’Andre Smith (2020, San Dimas, Calif) hit back-to-back singles to clear the bases for a three-run maroon lead. Smith had an impressive BP session earlier in the event with his compact swing and quick hands. As a middle infielder, he had one of the strongest arms across the diamond topping out at 85 mph from short, and he has a quick first step towards either hole.

In the fourth, freshman Jaedeyn Edwards (2022, Los Angeles, Calif.) impressed with his live young arm that sat 85-86 mph with a little sink on his fastball. He also possesses a polished 11-to-4 curveball that fooled back-to-back hitters for strikeouts. He has a quick motion and falls off to his glove side through his finish.

Mater Dei High School’s Garrett Riley (2020, Santa Ana, Calif.) had an excellent day as a two-way player posting two hits, an RBI and fanning four out of the five batters he faced for team black. On the bump, he closes his front shoulder in his delivery and hides the ball very well from the left side with his late and quick separation. He was by far the most efficient pitcher at the event and was effectively locating to both sides of the plate.

Another notable position player performance was from freshman catcher Ben Lee (2022, Santa Monica, Calif.). Lee posted a solid pop time behind the plate of 2.08 seconds and showcased a quiet swing with good barrel control in BP. In the game, Lee displayed discipline and an understanding for the strike zone with two hard earned walks on the day.
