PG California Pre-Draft Notes

Hits were at an absolute premium for the PG Identifier Pre-Draft Showcase at LA Valley College on Saturday. In a game that was riddled with Southern California (and Oklahoma) talent on both sides of the ball, it was the pitching that dominated.

Arizona commit and the 251st-ranked 2019 draft prospect Dawson Netz (2019, Sierra Madre, Calif.) had the best velocity at the showcase sitting at 90-92 mph and touching 94. Netz has a quick arm action with a high three-quarters arm slot. His breaking ball has a large-shaped 11-to-4 action, but scouts would like to see a firmer breaking ball out of him in the future. Netz recorded three punchouts out of the five batters faced on the day.

The 519th-ranked draft prospect and Oklahoma commit Jake Bennett (2019, Tulsa, Okla.) started for the maroon team and threw two scoreless innings while fanning three of his own with his strong 11-to-4 shaped curveball. He has a long and lengthy frame on the bump and finds some two-seam run on his 89-91 mph fastball.

Arizona State commit and #203 2019 draft prospect Michael Carpentier(2019, Highland, Calif.) looked strong behind the dish on the day showcasing his quick feet and strong arm down to second base.

Scoring in the game finally opened up in the third inning with a two-run blast by Arizona commit and the 581st-ranked 2019 draft prospect, Blake Klassen (2019, Rancho Mission Viejo, Calif.). Klassen has showcased plenty of pop this season out of his 6-foot-2, 205-pound frame. His low load and hunched stance projects much like New York Yankee Mike Ford along with his downward bat path and shoulder rotation.

A BYU commit that checks in a No. 360 as part of PG’s Half-Draft rankings, Tyson Heaton (2019, Yucaipa, Calif.) came into the ballgame in the fourth and held the fort down. MLB scouts are high on Heaton for his projectable frame and pitching savvy. Heaton sat around 89-90 mph on the day and touched 91. Scouts are hopeful that he’ll sit in the 92-94 range once his frame develops completely.

Later in the ballgame Nevada commit David Hays (2019, Long Beach, Calif.) was able to answer back for the maroon team with an RBI single through the four hole to cut the lead in half, but that concluded the scoring for the day. Klassen had the only extra-base hit of the game as team black defeated team maroon 2-1.
