Cole Wilcox, Georgia
A big, power arm for Georgia, Cole Wilcox got the nod in game two for the Bulldogs as they took on Arkansas on Thursday. Wilcox topped out at 97 mph with a plus slider and a plus changeup, pretty good stuff from a player who is still in his first year in college. The fastball also showed plus life on one pitch in particular that was 97 mph at the knees and really took off out of his hand running in on the opposing righthanded hitter’s hands. The command is average at best, but the overall stuff is remarkable enough that Wilcox will be a big-time asset to decision makers next year as he will be a draft-eligible sophomore coming out of Athens. In this game, Wilcox sat 93-97 mph with more 96s and 97s than 93s, a gifted trait for a pitcher at his age. Wilcox uses a very large frame, a strong lower half and an ultra-fast and whippy arm to create such outstanding velocity. It is simply special what Wilcox has at his disposal as a pitcher, and with another year remaining in Athens, a 1-2 punch of he and Emerson Hancock is going to be hard to beat.
