Junior southpaw Michael Giacone got the opening start of the season for the No. 1 ranked North Greenville Crusaders and Giacone showed a lot of things to like out of a prospect. Giacone, the California JUCO Pitcher of the Year, was highly recruited out of Orange County Community College and looks the part of a legitimate draft prospect. The delivery and arm action are both sound and his athletic frame allows him to repeat his delivery nicely down the mound. Giacone only went three innings on the mound but showed a fastball that sat 87-91 mph, while topping at 92 mph once, and had some good angle to it. He walked a couple of batters in the first inning but showed a good feel for locating the pitch to either side of the plate and wasn't afraid to elevate to generate swings and misses, particularly late in the count. The breaking ball was a fringy pitch at best during this look and he didn't showcase it often, instead opting to attack hitters with his fastball and go to the high heater with two strikes. Giacone also showed a usable changeup that forces righthanded hitters to stay honest against him. The athleticism of the delivery, fastball command, and room to improve with the breaking ball makes Giacone and intriguing prospect and someone that warrants more looks as the spring goes on.
