2019 Preseason Junior College Top 25 Team Reports

1. Wabash Valley
The preseason No. 1 club – and therefore our pick to win it all in Grand Junction – is absolutely loaded throughout both the lineup and the pitching rotation. Ryan O'Connell and Cameron Tullar are both strike-throwing, deceptive starting pitchers who won't overpower but should win a lot of ballgames, while Antoine Kelly and Nick King offer significant draft upside, as well as the potential to dominate on the mound this season. The bullpen is just as strong, with Jon Beymer, Andy Samuelson, Janier Puente, Connor Fenlong and newcomer Blaine Gillim all expected to be key contributors. One of the top JUCO players in the country, Noah Myers, will lead off and play center field while playing very good defense, getting on base at a high clip, and showing some pop as well. Zade Richardson will start behind the plate and offers significant upside as a very good defensive catcher who can also mash. Cael Baker will do some catching as well and will being impact to the offense, while outfielder Manny Gonzalez – still a raw freshman – offers potentially the most pure upside of anyone.

2. Northwest Florida State
Another absolutely loaded club, if it all came down to the Raiders and Wabash Valley in the finale of the season it surely wouldn't surprise us. Jake Randa may end up winning Player of the Year at the junior college level and makes a case to be the top JUCO hitter across the country. He's joined in the lineup by Kaden Polcovich, KC Simonich, Tanner Johnson, and Will Moriarty, just to name a few, giving the Raiders a substantial, deep lineup. On the mound, South Carolina signee Thomas Farr will draw plenty of attention from pro scouts as he works into the upper-90s at times with his fastball, while Jake Kelchner, Conor Angel, Jacob Kush and Calvin Starnes – as well as a potential two-way guy in Will Moriarty – all figure to pitch big innings and be very good in them. This is a loaded group.

3. Central Arizona
Our pick to click out west, Central Arizona added one of the most potentially impactful transfers back in the fall in Lucas Knowles – a member of the CWS participant Washington Huskies last June – who quickly became one of the top pitching prospects across JUCO baseball. The pitching staff in totality is deep and talented, with Jason Nelson and Leo Palacios joining Knowles in the rotation, along with big-time arms like Brandon Jenkins and Dakota Donovan in the back end of the bullpen. Watch out for DJ Carpenter and Jon Stroman as well. Offensively, veterans Ernny Ordonez and Brennan Reback will set the table while Luke Schwartz, Daniel Cervantes and Jake Meyer are expected to extend the lineup and make CAC tough 1-9. They'll certainly pitch it and catch it, but the offense is likely what their ultimate upside this season hinges on.
