Opportunities abound at PG

Jeff Dahn

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – As Perfect Game continues to grow and expand its presence both nationally and internationally in what is its 25th year of operation in 2019, internship and part-time job opportunities within the company are expanding just as rapidly.

PG will offer six distinct internship programs and an exciting part-time job opportunity in 2019. The internships are in Social Media; Tournament Management Assistant; Baseball Journalism; Event Staffing Assistant and Scouting Assistant and Merchandise; the job position is as a Scout/Field Manager.

The internship programs bring hundreds of young, passionate baseball enthusiasts into the PG family for at least one summer and, in many cases, many more to come. PG Director of Event Staffing/DiamondKast Andrew Jackson is quick to point out that people who today are a part of PG’s full-time staff were introduced to the company as PG interns.

“It really shows you the inner workings of the front office and how we run things on a day-to-day basis,” Jackson said. “It gives you a chance to see what a full-time staff member does and with our growing business there’s always that chance for an open full-time position. … With the way that (PG is) growing, there are going to be a lot of opportunities available.”

The Scout/Field Manager position is the largest in terms of the numbers, with anywhere between 150 to 200 people needed in seven states. It provides an opportunity for those selected to watch and scout PG tournament games by keeping score using the advanced DiamondKast technology.

Individuals able to attain a scouting internship with PG will learn how to use DiamondKast, Diamond Kinetics and other analytic tools that have become a big part of the scouting universe in recent years.

They will be instructed by full-time members of PG’s scouting department, many of whom started out in one of these entry-level positions and moved up into more prominent positions within Perfect Game’s management structure. Many others left PG to take positions within the scouting departments of major league clubs, including the Astros, Indians, Mariners, Red Sox and Rockies, among others.

“They’ll get to scout the players while they’re working the games,” Jackson said. “It really gives people a great experience looking for top talent at our tournaments and it helps them find an eye for recognizing the type of player (capable) of moving on to the next level. The biggest thing is giving them experience in what a (full-time) scout might do watching players and what they look for.”

Jackson said one of the most popular programs is the Scouting Assistant Internship because it affords the intern the opportunity to work right alongside one of PG’s experienced and talented full-time scouts.

He or she can learn and observe first-hand how a professional scout goes about the business of generating a scouting report on a young prospect that will be second-to-none in terms of the respect it receives across the national baseball landscape.

There have been 1,208 alumni of PG tournaments and showcases that have made their debuts in Major League Baseball, a number that is sure to go up as early as Opening Day on March 28, 2019.

MLB Most Valuable Players Mike Trout, Josh Donaldson, Joey Votto, Buster Posey, Andrew McCutchen, Bryce Harper, Kris Bryant, Clayton Kershaw, Mookie Betts and Christian Yelich, and former Cy Young Award winners Zack Greinke, David Price, Corey Kluber, Rick Porcello and Kershaw are among PG alumni that PG scouts first had the opportunity to watch perform when the players were high school prospects.

Interns brought on board this summer will be given a chance to see the big-league stars of the future while they perform as the country's top high school-aged prospects.
