Peoria preps for 17u PGWS

PEORIA, Ariz. – The 7th annual 17u Perfect Game World Series begins its five-day run on Thursday, July 19 with games being played at the Peoria Sports Complex, the Major League Baseball spring training home of the Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres.

Thirty-five of the top upperclass teams from across the country will participate in the invitation-only event. They have been split up into seven, five-team pools and after playing four pool games, the top-two finishers in each pool will move on to a 14-team, single-elimination playoff bracket.

Among the teams that will compete for this exclusive PG national championship title are Team GA Baseball Gold and the Elite Squad 17u. Marietta, Ga.-based Team GA Baseball won the PG 17u WWBA National Championship in Atlanta, and the Pembroke Pines, Fla.-based Elite Squad Baseball won the PG 17u BCS National Championship title in Fort Myers, Fla.; both of those tournaments were played earlier this month.

All 35 teams’ rosters are peppered with many of the top prospects from the high school graduating classes of 2019, 2020 and 2021. The top 2019s that are rostered and expected to be on hand include nationally No. 13-ranked right-hander/outfielder Bryce Osmond (USA Prime Elite 17u Gowins), No. 26 shortstop Cade Doughty (Canes National 17u) and No. 27 outfielder Garrett Frechette (San Diego Show).

The top 2020s include No. 6 outfielder Trejyn Fletcher (Blackhawks National), No. 19 outfielder Nicholas Griffin (Sticks Baseball Academy 17u) and No. 20 shortstop Robert Moore (Royals Scout Team). No. 3 outfielder Roc Riggio (GBG Marucci) and No. 7 outfielder Braylon Bishop (Sticks Baseball Academy 17u) head the list of highly ranked 2021s.

South Florida Elite Squad (2012), EvoShield Canes (2013), Houston Banditos (2014), Orlando Scorpions Prime (2015), T-Rex Baseball (2016) and Midwest Elite Baseball (2017) won 17u PGWS national championships the previous six years.
