Northwest Region (Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming)

The strength of the Northwest Region is undoubtedly in the exceptionally strong junior class, which features four players ranked in the top 200 in the PG 2019 national class rankings, including infielder/catcher Carter Young at 19th overall and outfielder Corbin Carroll at 31st. Both players already have national reputations in the scouting community, with Young being a starter for the 18u USA National Junior team and already getting light comparisons to Houston Astros infielder Alex Bregman.

Unfortunately for the Northwest colleges, those four players will be taking their talents out of the region for college, as Young is committed to Vanderbilt and Carroll to UCLA. Two big lefthanded sluggers, first baseman Henry Gargus (83rd) and outfielder Cole Hinkelman (182nd) are both committed to Stanford.

The depth of young potential top prospects goes beyond Washington's junior class, however, as a pair of Oregon sophomores, hard throwing righthander Mick Abel and catcher Logan Paustian, are high-level talents already.

Washington righthander Jayson Schroeder stands out as the top senior prospect in the region and will get plenty of early scouting attention when the season begins.




Northwest Region High School Dream Team

C – Alex Guerrero, Sr., Eagle HS, Eagle (Idaho)
Guerrero is solid behind the plate defensively but his best tool is his strong lefthanded bat. He has quick hands and a short and direct swing and has shown the ability to drive the ball with carry to all fields. Guerrero hit .452-3-24 as a junior at Eagle High School, and at Washington, where he is signed, having an outstanding trio of catchers in their 2018 signing class, it has been speculated that Guerrero might move to a corner position to get his bat in the lineup.

1B – Henry Gargus, Jr., Yakima Davis HS, Yakima (Wash.)
Gargus was the All-Region first baseman in 2017 and is a likely a three-time selection should the All-State performer continue to hit and hit with power like he has his first two high school seasons. A switch-hitter with a strong and mature frame at 6-foot-1, 210-pounds, Gargus has some of the best raw power in the country but is a surprisingly good runner who has run a 6.9 60-yard dash and has also played plenty of outfield in his young career. He has a verbal commitment to Stanford.

MIF – Carter Young, Jr., Selah HS, Selah (Wash.)
Young is a versatile and athletic high performance player with a very polished game for his age and the area of the country he comes from. He led the 2016 USA 15u National Team in RBI and not only made the 2017 USA 18u National Team coming out of his sophomore year, the only 2019 player on the team, but started all nine games at the World Junior Championships, hitting .294 with four steals and five runs scored. He is verbally committed to Vanderbilt.

MIF – Jake Dukart, Sr., Lake Oswego HS, Lake Oswego (Ore.)
Dukart is a very athletic 6-foot-2, 180-pound middle infielder with very good lefthanded bat speed and a swing that is short and quick to the ball. Dukart originally committed to Arizona State for baseball but switched his commitment to a football ride to Oregon State, where he will also play baseball, after blossoming in that sport over the past two years.

3B – Willie Weiss, Sr., Westview HS, Beaverton (Ore.)
Weiss is a big and strong two-way standout at third base and on the mound and the highest ranked senior in Oregon in the PG 2018 national prospect rankings, checking in at number 407 overall. He's a righthanded hitter with plenty of power in his bat and solid defensive actions at third base, although he may have a chance to develop into a better pitcher in the future. He is signed with Michigan.

OF – Corbin Carroll, Jr., Lakeside HS, Seattle (Wash.)
Carroll is a prototypical speedy center fielder and is one of the fastest players in the 2019 class nationally. He has surprising bat speed from the left side for a still-growing 5-foot-10, 165-pound athlete and is capable of pulling the ball out of the part and driving it to the alleys for extra bases. He has verbally committed to UCLA.

OF – Cole Hinkelman, Jr., Skyline HS, Sammamish (Wash.)
Hinkelman is a big and athletic 6-foot-4, 220-pound lefthanded hitting outfielder and is part of the state of Washington's standout junior class. He hit .400-1-18 as a sophomore at Skyline High School and is the 182nd-ranked player in the PG 2019 national class rankings. Hinkelman is also an exceptional student off the field and has verbally committed to Stanford.

OF – Dustin Garcia, Sr., South Kitsap HS, Port Orchard (Wash.)
Garcia is a darling of the Northwest scouting community due to his live bodied athleticism and his strong lefthanded swing. He should be able to stay in center field at the next level and he has plenty of room to add strength to his 6-foot, 170-pound frame and already solid bat speed. Garcia is signed with Arizona State.

UT – Andrew Walling, Sr., Castle Rock HS, Castle Rock (Wash.)
Walling matured physically at an early age and has been a well-known prospect since he was throwing in the upper-80s as a freshman. The 6-foot-3 lefthanded thrower and hitter looked early in his high school career like a future lef handed pitcher but has evolved more as a power hitting first baseman than on the mound. He's a 4.0 student off the field and an Oregon State signee.

SP – Mick Abel, So., Jesuit HS, Cedar Mill (Ore.)
Abel is only a sophomore but he has the potential to be the next star prospect out of the Northwest. He has a young, 6-foot-5, 175-pound build that is extremely projectable on the mound but already has some pitching polish to go with present plus stuff that should continue to improve as he gains physical maturity. Abel was already working in the upper-80s and touching higher as a freshman but threw at the WWBA MLK West Championship in Arizona in January and topped out at 94 mph while throwing a mid- to upper-80s slider. He has a verbal commitment to Oregon State and is ranked fifth in the PG Class of 2020 national rankings.

SP – Damon Casetta Stubbs, Sr., Kings Way Christian HS, Vancouver (Wash.)
Casetta Stubbs and lefthander Samuel Lauderdale form one of the best pitching duos on the West Coast, so it is not surprising that the All-Region pair led Kings Way Christian High School to the state 1A championship last year and a 23-2 overall record. Casetta Stubbs has been up to 91 mph with his fastball but his best pitch is a low-80s slider that is short and tight and that hitters don't recognize well. He is signed with Seattle University.

SP – Samuel Lauderdale, Sr., Kings Way Christian HS, Vancouver (Wash.)
Lauderdale is a young looking and very slender 6-foot-2, 165-pound southpaw with outstanding physical projectability. He is a three-pitch starter with a mid- to upper-80s fastball that he commands well and that should gain velocity as he matures, along with a solid curveball and changeup combination. Lauderdale is signed with Washington State.

SP – Jacob Pfennigs, Sr., Post Falls HS, Post Falls (Idaho)
The 6-foot-7 Pfennigs repeats on the All-Region team for the third time and comes armed with a 90 mph fastball, a tight mid-70s curveball and big angle to the plate. The Oregon State baseball signee has been getting more attention recently for his basketball play, as he has averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds per game for one of the top teams in the state and has drawn late basketball recruiting interest from Pac-12 teams.

SP – Jayson Schroeder, Sr., Juanita HS, Kirkland HS, Kirkland (Wash.)
Schroeder went 4-4, 160 in eight starts as a junior but notably struck out 84 hitters in only 43 innings and has now struck out 161 hitters over his three-year varsity career. The 6-foot-2 righthander works in the low-90s with his fastball with a right mid-70's curveball that is his strike out pitch. Schroeder, who also plays basketball and football and plays third base for Juanita High School when not pitching, is signed with Washington.
