The Gastonia Grizzlies reigned victorious in the CPL Championship Series, claiming the Pettit Cup. They did so by way of quite the Cinderella journey, barely squeaking into the playoffs as the fourth seed in the West Division and owning the lowest winning percentage of any of the eight CPL playoff clubs.

In terms of prospects the league once again looks to be among the upper echelons of collegiate summer leagues, roughly on par with leagues such as the Northwoods and Alaska, for reference. There exists a good mix of underclassmen talent, notably No. 1 prospect sophomore Andre Nnebe from Santa Clara, along with seven more sophomores dotting the top 20. There are, however, several notable talents who will be draft eligible in 2018, led by overall No. 2 prospet Nick Podkul of Notre Dame along with No. 3 Graham Lawson of South Carolina.

Both the Player and Pitcher of the Year enjoyed huge summer seasons and as a result were named to Perfect Game Summer Collegiate All-America teams. Player of the Year Evan Edwards was named to the Third Team after slashing .355/.474/.703 with 13 doubles and 13 home runs. Pitcher of the Year Zach Neff had even more video game-like numbers, being named to the First Team after going 7-0 with a pair of saves, a 1.45 ERA and an eye-popping 65-to-7 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 49 2/3 innings of work.

Top 10 Prospect Reports

1. Andre Nnebe, of, Wilson (Santa Clara/SO in 2018)
Whenever a player is compared, however lightly, to Aaron Judge, one tends to listen up a little better. That was the case when speaking with evaluators about Andre Nnebe of Santa Clara, only a sophomore in 2018. Physically imposing in the same way Aaron Judge was at Fresno State, Nnebe comes with the same concerns evaluators had with Judge. Nnebe is as XL as XL gets in baseball, standing 6-foot-6 and weighing in somewhere around 240 pounds with excellent strength and athleticism for his size. The calling card here is, of course, Nnebe’s prodigious righthanded power which grades out at least plus at present with a chance to be off-the-scale in terms of raw power at peak. The length of his limbs creates issues with velocity at times, and he’s susceptible to swinging and missing frequently, but the power with quality feel to hit as well the tremendous for-his-size athleticism that he possesses are too much to ignore.
