The top of the CCL continues to get more and more interesting as a new team seems to assert itself each and every year. The league grew to 13 teams in 2017 and the Healdsburg Prune Packers won the North Division and the overall regular season crown by percentage points over the Orange County Riptide.

Healdsburg and Orange County then met in the postseason finals with the Riptide winning a deciding game three to earn their first CCL title. Both clubs had excellent summers but another commonality for the two clubs were strong family ties to the big leagues. Healdsburg was run by Joey Gomes (brother of Jonny) and Orange County was skippered by Tyger Pederson (brother of Joc) this year.

One other interesting hallmark of the CCL has been the league’s ability to attract players from marquis Power 5 programs.  This summer was no exception as this Top 20 prospect list includes eight players from Arkansas, Texas, and Texas Tech. Fans of the old Southwest Conference would be proud.

Top 10 Prospect Reports

1. John McMillon, rhp/of, Santa Barbara (Texas Tech/SO in 2018)
McMillon is one of the more intriguing prospects in all of college baseball. His fastball routinely touched 98 mph this summer and you could argue that he possesses more raw power than any of his peers in the sophomore class. McMillon is a ‘three true outcomes’ (walk, strikeout, home run) player and the stats back that up. He homered 10 times in 104 official at-bats through the spring and summer while also striking out an eye-popping 51 times. As it stands today, McMillon’s insanely high upside is more playable on the mound and he dominated CCL hitters this summer with 35 strikeouts in just 20 innings. This is a player with two elite tools so the sky is the limit here.
